What a nice day today was. I met two friends for lunch at Anna Mae’s (a fantastic Mennonite restaurant in the middle of…. farm land). Tricia and Judy are friends from camp. We realized that this marks the 10 year anniversary of our college graduations. Yikes! Anyway, after lunch we did some shopping in Millbank and then in Waterloo. I wanted to take pictures today as the farms looked awesome and pristine in the snow but I was running late and didn’t get a chance to stop. *sniff*. I did see some great sites though - I saw lots of Amish out on sleighs, pony carts, and just trotting around town. It was neat. I also managed to find a curtain - our old house had two windows and our new house has three and I only had two… I found them half price so managed to find one in our pattern. I just need to find a curtain rod - it seems no one has the small ones I am looking for. Anyway, it was a beautiful day with friends and I hope everyone was out enjoying the great weather.

We hosted our first party, and it was a success. There were 3 people who said they’d come but didn’t, but there were still 13 people that did. I was scrambling around like a chicken with it’s head cut off (actually, it’s finger - I’ve cut my hands 3 times this week, what’s with that??) and didn’t welcome Jenn home too well (Jenn was a great help with cleaning up my mess and cleaning the bathrooms, and cutting up the bread, and … she did alot!), but by 5:15 people started showing up and the dinner was all ready.
Mushroom, onion, and bacon baked cheese dip (with cream cheese and swiss cheese) with homemade bread
Spinach dip in a bread ball (courtesy of Sandy, who also brought wine)
Raspberry spinach salad with sugared almonds - the sweet crunchiness is unbeatable
Waldorf pasta salad - the light, mellow creamy texture nicely complemented the flavourful stir frys
Candied yams - sweet (though I must confess I slightly undercooked them)
“To Stir, With Love” - a chicken veggy tangy stir fry (with a hint of sesame oil, and apricot jam)
Beef Tandori stir fry - a mild curry, with strong flavour
Coconut basmati rice - very bright, with raisins and a cinnamon taste
Glazed orange cake - mild, moist, and light
Peanut butter chocolate cheesecake - always a hit, sure to top off your tummy
Carrot cake with cream cheese icing (courtesy of Roh and Jen, who also brought wine)
Bryan and Amanda brought some beer and wine, too. And the GOLD (Guelph Online Documentation) team bought us a beautiful snowman plate - Jenn adores it! Thanks Cheryl, Jean, Sandy, Margie and Elizabeth for coming! It was a fantastic event - we’ve got lots of food left over, so if anyone wants to pop by for a visit, there may be some left to share. And beer and wine like you wouldn’t believe. I didn’t even get to crack open the after dinner drinks. Oh well - next time (or tonight, whichever comes first

I just heard that a friend of mind was two stations away from the London bombing on July 21st! Yikes! Needless to say, her vacation was quite interesting. I’m glad to hear she is okay. She just finished university and this was her celebration trip! She turned 50 while there. We started our degree together so we have quite a history. Just glad to hear she is fine and had a great holiday otherwise - she deserved it!

I love having pity taken on me because my chef is no longer here. I was fed twice on the weekend! I must admit that the highlight was eating at Chocolate Ladies house. (She has a chocolate making business). She just bought a chocolate fountain and has been experimenting with it so being the humble guest I was, I had to sample it and play in it. Fun! I would totally rent one. I am invited back later this week… I wonder if the fountain will be running….
Then last night I went to Paula’s and we watched the Aviator. I didn’t know it was about Howard Hughes… and then it all came back to me - I have been on the Spruce Goose! Cool. She just got back from Las Vegas so I got to look at all the great photos they took.
Yeah for wonderful friends! I am going to miss them all for sure.

Last night I thought I was going out for dinner with a few of my friends - turned out to be a surprise party for me with 21 friends!! I was so surprised and as I looked down the table I was amazed at all the people there. My great friend Chrystal organized it all and made sure to include people from the two schools I have worked at as well as people I used to work with - even the teacher that hired me was there! It was great! My friend Paula gave me a gift of an address book so everyone could fill in their address - perfect idea. They also brought me a cake - not just any cake - but a Phylis cake!!! If you live in Kingston, you get to know a Phylis cake. They are homemade and fantastic! I have put pictures of them on my website. Since I just finished teacher’s college they had an apple and then a picture of Winnie the Pooh because I like him too! I have LOTS of yummy cake leftover too. My friend Nancy painted me a wooden mirror - in Lottie pattern. It’s just something that is special to both of us so I was happy to have something to remind me of her when I move. It was just such a great night and I can’t thank you all enough for making me feel so loved!! I’d mention you all… but I might forget someone!! Hopefully someone will e-mail me pictures soon so I can post them. I must admit I wasn’t looking my best but I’m sure all of my ’sisters’ will look great in the pics!

Many thanks to those who gave prayers for the upcoming decision and wished us well with the outcome of our life-changing decision. It’s so nice to have friends who are truly excited for me and happy with my successes, even though it may mean opportunities for me which they may wish they had as well, and rough times for them in the short-term at work. Though new friends will be made, I will miss them and the fun times we’ve had working together, joking with each other, and supporting each other. Work relationships are really so much more than just professional.
So we’ll be moving - me within the month, and Jenn shortly thereafter. It’s exciting but nerve-wracking - the extreme of emotions of which memories are made. In roughly 3 weeks my current life and the past 10 years will be permanently archived, and a new era begun.

120-year-old tortoise adopts baby hippo
Link
Some people in Kenya rescued a dehydrated baby hippo that had been separated from its herd. The released it into an enclosure in a sanctuary, and it ran over to a giant tortoise, and is now “inseparable” say officials.
“‘When we released Owen into the enclosure, he lumbered to the tortoise which has a dark gray color similar to grown up hippos,’ Sabine Baer, rehabilitation and ecosystems manager at the park, told Reuters.”

I just heard that a friend of mine received a call from the Oprah producers and interviewed her over the phone last night as a potential guest on the show! Can you believe it!! I don’t know how confidential this is so I can’t really give any details about them or what it would be for but it would be awesome if they went on! Woohoo!!
UPDATE: So, I just talked to my friend Chrystal and I got the okay to spread the word! I think she has lost over 150 pounds and has been able to keep the weight off! A friend of hers (perhaps more than one but one inparticular got noticed) sent in a letter to Oprah along with photos. So the producer called her yesterday! She had to send in more photos today and another friend sent in an additional letter. It’s amazing… someone I know might be on Oprah! She was my gym buddy until both of us got new schedules. Anyway, I will keep you updated as I hear news!

Wow! I’ve been amazed this week by people! So many people have offered to help me with different programming ideas, or sending me articles for papers, or craft ideas! It’s been great! So to all of you, I say, “Thank you Thank you Thank you!!”

Our main local friends are off to Ethiopia for a year and tonight was our last night with them. I don’t know if Doug is more upset that they are leaving or that they just bought a brand new laptop and he only got to play on it for a few hours before it leaves the country for a year. Anyway, they will definitely be missed…

We had a visitor last night!! My good friend Merry-Anne, from high school, was in town singing with the Elora Festival Singers. So I went to her concert (great job by the way!!) and then we went out on the town. She stayed over but had to leave after breakfast this morning. It was SOOOO great to see her since I think it’s been about 2.5 years!
