Guelph Pollination Park

Guelph Pollination Park

The theme of our research initiative is the creation of the world’s first Pollination Park in Guelph by using the decommissioned Eastview landfill site. The Eastview landfill site of over 100 acres has been decommissioned and capped with clay and topsoil. The City of Guelph intends that the area be made into recreational and educational parkland. Currently, methane is being extracted from the landfill beneath the clay and is being used to generate electricity for the city. At present, the top soil layer supports a weedy and grassy vegetation with little aesthetic value. The main landfill area cannot be used for playing fields and such activities because the clay cap’s integrity must be maintained. Thus, usage must be designed in accordance with environmental and safety issues. The City of Guelph is considering seriously using the environmentally sensitive area for the world’s first Pollination Park that would serve as a model worldwide. This research initiative proposes to bring together expertise in urban landscape architecture, urban ecology, horticulture, pollination biology from both animal and plant perspectives, landfill management engineers, and city planners.

Just a few hundred meters from our house. Who knew that something so gross (and unappealing, residentially speaking) could be turned into something so good?

Here’s another great article about it.

Cabin Fever

February 26th, 2008 -- Posted in General | 2 Comments »

Doug and I have been spending our evenings in front of the fire, watching TV and playing on our laptops. We’ve been getting antsy and are getting cabin fever… so we are making goals to do things in the evenings. Last night we went to the library and then a teeny tiny walk at Guelph Lake. Tonight we went skating on the pond across the road ( I will have a purple knee come the morning - ‘toe pick’). Doug did lots of shoveling before a guy came out with his snowblower. Turns out the guy has three boys and used to live down the street - so when they were building backing onto the pond he moved so he could maintain the ice for his boys! Very cool! We think tomorrow will be cookie baking!!

Rockin’ Like I Was 16

Linkin Park is friggin’ awesome in concert. The two opening bands were mediocre - the first’s bass thumped me, and the second’s lead singer’s hair was huge. But then Linkin Park came out and it was great. It wasn’t very long - I think 1.5 hours (plus the 2 hours waiting during setup and the opening acts). It was kinda fun feeling young again… as if I was drinking Pepsi, or is it Coke? Almost got into the mosh pit, broke up a cat fight between 3 girls, was maybe 25 feet from the stage, and I must’ve been high from the ambient marij smoke. But they really do put on a good concert. Maybe I’ll find some other people’s pictures on Flickr (my alternative to taking my own photos).

Accidents

So are Smart Cars less likely to get in accidents because they are half a car??

So many places…

February 19th, 2008 -- Posted in adventures | 3 Comments »

Doug and I generally keep a list of places we want to go to on vacation - and we each get our personal choice around every other year. Last summer we went to Disney (me!!!) and this summer we are off to Newfoundland (Doug!). We might both want to go there but … anyway, we each get a vote… Moving on as I can’t put words together. Does anyone have any favourite places we should add to the list (pretty general list we are making). We want to go to the west coast, east coast (Halifax area), PEI again, Europe (um… can we narrow that down)… anyway, just working on our list and am wondering what people suggest. I think I am working on a separate ‘warm destination’ list for those winters we want to just get away and relax!

Long Weekend

February 16th, 2008 -- Posted in General | 1 Comment »

I must say I am liking Family Day! Woohoo! I am so excited to have a long weekend after a VERY long week!! You can tell the winter blues have set in at work as the pre-March Break umm… mood has set in - including myself! But I did the math last night and there are only 13 working days until March Break - and two of those weeks are four day weeks! Oh! And on my five day week I am away at a workshop for one day! YEAH!!! Bring it on! I’m a little sad looking at the forecast as sometimes it is like spring for March Break - I’m not thinking spring will be close by the time the break hits.

Is it Friday?

This week has been long. Yet when I did calendar this morning with the kids I was shocked to see it was Thursday! Maybe because it feels like I’m on next week already!! It’s been eventful. It was the 100th day of school this week. To celebrate the primary end did a whole bunch of games involving the number 100. Then as a finale, students brought a collection of 100 things to the gym and then traded with other students! I got a good haul for my stickers! Pens, candy, pennies, pencils… good times! Then today was Valentine’s! We went swimming to celebrate today! And tomorrow - well just glad that it will finally be Friday followed by a long weekend!! Woohoo!

Winter

February 10th, 2008 -- Posted in General | 3 Comments »

This winter has been a ‘childhood’ winter… the huge snowbanks, snowstorms, etc. One great thing, is that it hasn’t been cold!… until now. It’s windchill of -30! I’m not excited about yard duty tomorrow! Luckily it isn’t my double duty day!

On a side note… Maytag is no longer a great appliance. We have three Maytag appliances and all three have had problems in the two years we have had them. Someone I know is on their fourth washer since July! But… I already read the same company makes Kitchen-Aid - the other two appliances we have… We’ll see!

Perfectionism

February 5th, 2008 -- Posted in General | 1 Comment »

Sunday’s sermon was on perfectionism. I think my definition of perfectionism was those who are very organized and own label makers and carry them in their purse. But he brought up some interesting points which made me move away from that definition a little. Many procrastinators don’t being projects because they don’t think they can do it well so they don’t even try. I am not very organized but I think I have perfectionist tendencies… And he also talked about how perfectionists beat themselves up because they didn’t do something perfectly. Anyway, it’s made me think. Do you think you’re a perfectionist?

Today’s the Day!

February 2nd, 2008 -- Posted in General | Comments Off

Yesterday was a snow day! YEAH!!! But because of all the snow we couldn’t get our new car… so today is the day! WOohoo!!

I was a good neighbour yesterday and helped shovel the neighbours driveway… I had just finished shoveling for the second time but since I was in the groove I kept going. It will need to be shoveled again today… blah! The first round was light and then in the afternoon it was heavier… so I’m assuming this morning will be heavy too.
