25th annual Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest

“Gerald began - but was interrupted by a piercing whistle which cost him ten per cent of his hearing permanently, as it did everyone else in a ten-mile radius of the eruption, not that it mattered much because for them ‘permanently’ meant the next ten minutes or so until buried by searing lava or suffocated by choking ash - to pee,”

- Gleeson wrote. Gleeson …works at a Madison hospital setting up computer networks. He claimed he took time off from his current project, a self-help book for slackers entitled “Self-Improvement Through Total Inactivity,” to pen his winning entry.

“Danny, the little Grizzly cub, frolicked in the tall grass on this sunny Spring morning, his mother keeping a watchful eye as she chewed on a piece of a hiker they had encountered the day before.”

-Dave McKenzie, Federal Way, Wash.

“The droppings of the migrating Canada geese just missed the outdoor revelers at the inaugural Asian math puzzle competition, marking the first time that dung flew over Sudoku Fest.”

Christmas Garland!

July 28th, 2007 -- Posted in General | 2 Comments »

Doug and I just got back from the Christmas-Garland wedding.  They pulled the same elusive trick as us by calling themselves “Laura and Rob” all evening so I have no idea if they are hyphenating (which would be so cool) or what!  The only person we knew at the wedding was the bride!  But - we had a GREAT time.  It was a Christmas themed wedding which added great atmosphere - there were Christmas crackers and ornaments in vases as the centrepieces.  The couple at our table were really fun - turns out she and I were in teacher’s college together - who knew?  And who knew there were so many ways to play with Christmas ornaments when you need to kill some time!!  The flashing ice cubes were also fun! Anyway, we had a great time and wish the bride and groom all the best!

Musings

Yesterday and today I kept hearing honking out front - the geese have overtaken our road creating huge traffic jams!  It’s kinda funny.  Hopefully they don’t take up residence at my house though.

Doug and I always watch the Tour De France in July - and it ended with a scandal last year and we thought this year was going smoothly but this week people keep getting withdrawn either with doping, or lying or… scandal!  It’s crazy!  The leader who was ahead by three minutes with 4 days left was pulled yesterday!  I guess the tour is never over until it’s over!!

I’m Done!

July 24th, 2007 -- Posted in General | 3 Comments »

I have read all 625 pages of Harry Potter.  I didn’t lose too much sleep like the others I saw in Chapter’s tonight (two all nighters..) but I did lose a whole day!  I was a little shocked at some of the language… not that there was a lot but there were a few swear words and one from Mrs. Weasley which just didn’t fit.  Oh, I did find one typo!  Overall I LOVED the book - I think it was a great finale.  I think it’s great that she stuck to her seven books rather than the umm… 15 that Left Behind has become!  I’m also glad we saw the movie before reading the book as it refreshed my memory of the characters and situations that I had forgotten from the last book!  Anyway, it was a great read!! Doug is still reading it so I can’t say too much more about it!

Harry!

July 20th, 2007 -- Posted in General | 3 Comments »

I put Harry Potter on hold at the library months ago and I was 62 on the waiting list.  The waiting list is now up to 235 for the regular copy and 65 (I was 21 on this list) for the large print edition.  Anyway, I counted up the number of books ordered at the library and it’s over 80 copies.  I went on the website tonight and it says my hold is in transit which means I should have it by early next week!!  WOOHOO!!  I’m so excited!!  If we’re up late tonight I wonder if Doug would up for a jaunt to Chapter’s for the Harry madness!

I spent the last week in Kingston hooking up with old friends and visiting my old haunts.  I ate at some great old restaurants and had some great visits!  I still miss that place but know that I would be unemployed if I still lived there … It has its own unique beauty and I really miss shopping downtown!!  When I got back, an hour later we left for Port Elgin to visit with the Lueck’s!  Their house is coming along great and they are great hosts!

Google Maps Rocks My World

July 3rd, 2007 -- Posted in General | Comments Off

The coolest thing ever just happened on Google Maps — they added dragability to routes! It was always so annoying to be given a route that took me through the city, and I wanted to go through another town, so I had to add waypoints. Now, just try dragging the blue route line and you can customize it to go anywhere you want! Rockin’!
