School’s Out!

June 29th, 2007 -- Posted in General | 4 Comments »

Ah, school is finally out.  I don’t know what other jobs are like, but it seems in schools, the last month every one gets really crusty and today was no exception!  We were all bitter!  And I woke up with the sore throat thing that has been floating around my classroom for two weeks - great!  Anyway, I’m definitely ready for the break but will be doing school work over the next week to try to get ready for September.  Since I have the same kids for three years I am always having to change things up.  So if you have any brilliant, new and exciting ideas - I am always open!!

Also, what are some fun day trips to do in Ontario??  Just want to make sure I don’t waste my summer!

Excited

I booked my hotel in Kingston and I will be there in two weeks!  WOohoo!  So excited to visit with old friends and see my old haunts!  I got a great deal on my hotel from the coupon I got over a year and a half ago!  I think I get $50 off the room a night and it’s the executive floor which means there won’t be any kids!  Ah…  a party!

Concerned?

Should I be concerned that I went to visit the new baby lizard in my friends classroom and it wasn’t in its cage?

90 km in 90 hours

I headed out for my semi-annual solo canoeing (the spell check thinks it should be “canoing” - weird) trip on Wednesday afternoon and just got back today. 70 kms of canoeing, 20 km of hiking/portaging in just under 4 days. Key highlights:

  • On one portage, I came upon (only 20 feet away) a huge bull moose having a mud bath - he jumped up and swaggered off
  • I got nice and close and took some pics of another bull moose eating swampy stuff. I’ll upload pics sometime
  • This morning I saw a mommy and baby moose swimming across the lake. Adorable.
  • I saw a swimming chipmunk. Did you know they swim?
  • I met myself in 40 years - he was an eccentric 71 year old man (I think his name is “Al”) with a thick white beard and old clothes (a real hermit) on a 2 week semi-annual trip through Algonquin. He talked to me for an hour or so, telling me some amazing stories from the years. He really wants to find an ol’ beau named Karel Mountsford (or something like that). Good luck to him.
  • Beautiful weather. A couple of amazing campsites. Lots of loons.
  • Great times. It was good to come home and have a shower. We went out to Swiss Chalet and are now watching Gilmore Girls. What a great vacation.

    Inspirational?

I saw this quote on a sign in front of a church in Brampton yesterday.  “Stop drop and roll won’t work in hell.”  Umm.. and ironically, it was beside the fire station as well.

As we continued to drive, I saw this bumper sticker. “Fat people are harder to kidnap.”

And those are my inspirational thoughts from the weekend.

    Perfect Timing!

So our basement is basically finished and we meet with the contractors tonight to just finish up paperwork… and guess who calls?  The furniture people!!  They are delivering our new stuff tomorrow!  Talk about perfect timing!

    Bitter

I haven’t been really mad and bitter for a long time… but yesterday, I was a little… tense to say the least.  I left the house in the morning seeing big trucks (an uneducated guess of a backhoe and bobcat) going between our house, and inches from our air conditioner.  I come home… our grass is non-existent, there are huge dents from trucks..  and there is a hole in my backyard from where the neighbours pool has extended into our yard… and watched a big truck being parked on our grass while he worked.  Boooo! I was bitter for quite a while.  I think the neighbour rang the doorbell but I definitely ignored it as I don’t think he REALLY wanted to talk to me yet…  The pool people are putting our concrete pad in… but I didn’t think they would be that liberal with ruining our grass…  Anyway, nothing I can do about it now…  but the neighbour will have fun fixing our yard and making it all pretty!

    I did it…

I went for my first motorcycle ride.  I have fulfilled my commitment to a ride around the parking lot… It wasn’t as bad as I thought… don’t know if it will be a regular thing but parking lot rides aren’t too bad. Our basement looks great with carpet!!  We turned on the fireplace last night and sat on the floor…  all is well.  We have a couch and chairs on order but they probably won’t be in for a month.  The bathroom should be done on Monday… and then… we’re guessing the end of the week it should all be done!
