Perfect Timing…

May 30th, 2006 -- Posted in General | 2 Comments »

… we had central air installed on Friday. Unfortunately the school isn’t air conditioned! Yuck. At least my classroom isn’t upstairs, they are probably 10 degrees hotter than my room!  A friend of mine works in a nursing home in the evenings and they still had their heat on on the weekend…

Donkey

We went to the Donkey Sanctuary today. It was really neat! Lots of different types of mules and donkeys. They also had a few goats and a sheep! Word of caution - sandals are not the best footwear. Anyway, you can touch them, go into the stalls, etc. Most of them reminded us of Eeyore - just standing around. This poor donkey stood about an inch from the wall just looking at it - must have been on time out. Then there were two larger ones scratching each others necks. One kissed my hand. Anyway, it is a fun place to go and just requires a donation for entry. Just a very happy place!

Hook, Line and Sinker

We were at the bank last night and when the bank guy was filling in some information he asked if I had the same last name as Doug.  I said yes. He went on about how he tries to remember to ask because people get so offended if they have different last names, etc…  Then went on to say he was engaged and they have been discussing about what to do with their names.  So we asked him if he would take her name to which he said no.  So we talked about what his new name would be and he just kept insulting the idea…  So I finally told him about Doug taking my name.  After that discussion he was so apologetic and hoping he hadn’t offended us…  We had to confess that we had totally baited him…  it was amusing.

After our bank visit we went to the Arboretum to smell all of the lilacs there!  They also have this neat marsh right now - I guess it dries up in the summer but the boardwalk goes right through the middle… very neat.

Edmonton is Fantastic

May 23rd, 2006 -- Posted in General | 2 Comments »

“This is some kind of playoff hockey tonight in Edmonton” (the classic phrase of Bob Cole (or is it Harry Neale?) - what a 3rd period this is turning out to be!  Incredible fans, incredible hockey… Edmonton may not have been the best team in the past number of years, but they are definitely one of the best teams to watch - nothing like the conservative but sloppy Leafs nor the skilled but un-dependable Senators.  Bryzgalov is choking - he looked too cocky before the game, revelling in the boo’s, now he looks humiliated.  “They’re blowing them away now…”

My Diary

May 22nd, 2006 -- Posted in General | 3 Comments »

Well, I’m back.

  • Day 1 - drove up to Killarney (5 hours), found a site in the campground - empty but for 3 people, nice view of the lake from my cliff top location, but rainy and quite buggy
  • Day 2 - registered, on the lake by 9, canoed for ~ 5 hours (I’m guessing 20+ km, on 5 lakes, believe it or not with only one 30 meter portage!) - heavy mist/light rain the entire time, not too cold (until I started to setup camp and the rain got heavier and the wind picked up and I was soaked), no bugs though.
  • Night 2 - was fully prepared to pack up in the morning and head back the way I came - the rain was incessant, the inside of the tent (my haven) was getting soaked, and I was freezing. No fire.
  • Day 3 - no rain in the morning so my spirits perked, so I gave up on giving up and continued on the way. The wind got stronger, got some soakers on the one portage (700 m x 3), short paddle (~ 9 km) but found a nice island campsite with a great breeze to dry things off, set up camp, the sun came out, and I sat in the sun - reading, snacking, sleeping, meandering around the site. Had the lake all to myself, perfect solitude.
  • Day 4 - 45 hours without talking to a person, 24 hours without seeing anyone - ahh, perfect solitude. Solace was the word I was thinking. The clouds came back, the wind picked up, the temperature dropped, but minimal rain so not too bad. My feet were frozen. Arrived on the destination lake (shorter paddle ~ 12 km), quickly found a campsite, and the wind howled. I set up a wind shield, changed into dry clothes, felt as though I had really low blood sugar so ate something, modified my wind shield (strapped the canoe between two trees), setup camp and made a pot of tea. Too windy to hike, too cold to sit and read, so I wandered and played with the GPS and read standing up and put up clotheslines and picked up sticks, and lectured the weather like you would a two-year old who’s misbehaving. By evening the sun had barely peaked out and I made a little fire before bed. Slept well.
  • Day 5 - woke up at 5, got up at 5:30, packed up, on the water by 6:20, still cloudy, not too windy nor cold, just blah. Figured no point in hanging around for another day of this so took a little shortcut (no less canoeing (~15 km, just ~ 2 km less portaging!), jumped in the car at 10:00 and drove Hwy 400 with the other vacationers (7 hours this time). So, I’m guessing 50 km over 5 (technically 4) days, the least portaging I’ve ever done, but more sitting around and hoping the weather will get nicer than I’d ever hope to do. 1 nice day, 2 mediocre, and 2 nasty - but I savoured what I wanted (the exercise, solitude, and nature). I saw a moose with her baby (must’ve only been no more than a couple weeks old - only a foot and a half tall), a moose running in the ditch, a bear watching me drive by, lots of loons, and thankfully no chipmunks, blackflies, and only a half dozen mosquitos. The neat thing to see (again) was how content I can be with just myself and nothing to do. My mind is entertainment enough.
  • Finally A Long Weekend

It’s the long weekend that I didn’t know I needed. But I haven’t slept well all week - it’s one of the first weeks this year that I have lost sleep over work. The second I wake up, no matter what time, my mind is racing about work.  Yuck.  I am hotel ‘parents’ for a few days and am relaxing!  I get to drive the new car too!  I’m a little scared as it isn’t standard and it isn’t automatic it’s… standomatic??  Anyway, will take some training.

Doug is off in the great outdoors for his annual spring solo camping trip.  He is in Killarney for five days and hopefully doesn’t freeze!  He picked up a new GPS the day before he left as well - so hopefully he makes it home.

As for comments, if yours doesn’t make it up, I apologize.  We are getting a lot of spam and I try to weed through them and if I delete it by mistake, I’m sorry!

    Different Isn’t Always Bad

When we left Kingston I was sad to be leaving drives and walks by the water.  As I have been driving around, I had no idea there was so much farmland!  The fields are rolling as well and they are just so peaceful.  Not sure what I like about them but they give me the same relaxing drive as driving by the water - different but still good.  I also had no idea there were soa many different farm vehicles (I get stuck behind many on my way to and from work!).  Time sure have changed.  My favourite is the one from this morning - it is so tall with narrow wheels - like a big bug!

    Paddling

We went for our first paddle of the year tonight.  We both zoomed home from work and we were on the water by 5:45 and were out for an hour and a half.  We were off the water, loaded and unloaded in about 5 minutes.  Gotta love having a lake at the end of your road!  It’s not as quiet, empty and peaceful as Kingston lakes but it will do when we need a fix.

    Summer Holidays

    May 7th, 2006 -- Posted in General | 2 Comments »

Doug and I have been thinking ahead to summer holidays.  We usually go away for about 10 days in August - but we have no plans yet!  What are some of your ideas of places to go, people to see, etc?  Last summer we did Maine, we have also done Pennsylvania (sorry Brock, no ghost towns this summer).

Can never post much about work but spring fever made work a little stressful today - BUT my ego was stroked three times today by unsuspected people and that has got me on a great high and reminds me of why I do what I do.  Yeah!

    Political Venting

    May 3rd, 2006 -- Posted in General | 2 Comments »

If there wasn’t enough reason to despise Harper, now it’s official that he’s on the same side as the Bloc. 2 ways to ruin Canada - vote Bloc and split the country, vote Conservative and send it down the drain - doesn’t really matter which one you choose, it’s the same end result.

Liberals pounced on the budget for abandoning a “commitment to fiscal prudence.”

…”Frankly our party cannot support a budget as unbalanced as this is in the interests of Canada and our economy.”

Liberal finance critic John McCallum said the government was spending savings derived from program cuts before they are even in the bank.

“This budget puts ideology before economics and policy, and fails to provide a sound economic vision for the future,” said McCallum.
