Question

April 29th, 2006 -- Posted in General | 3 Comments »

I’m just curious - when you travel, do you prefer to stay with friends or in a hotel?  Also, when friends come to visit do you prefer they stay with you or in a hotel?  I know it depends on the person but overall, what is your opinion?

McGill

April 26th, 2006 -- Posted in General | Comments Off

Random thoughts about McGill:

I personally have no experience with McGill (except Queen’s where they often wrote “Kill McGill” - but that wasn’t me). I digress…

We were at our friends house for dinner a couple of weeks ago and Marc was talking about how he had gone to McGill - his son (who is in grade eight) says, “Isn’t that like a good school?” - he was in total shock that his Dad might have gone somewhere reputable.

And - did you see that Wilson was wearing a McGill sweatshirt last night on House? Interesting… is he Canadian??

I guess those are my only thoughts - there is also a great vegetarian buffet (I’m not a veggie…) close to McGill… they also have a restaurant in Toronto. It is charged by weight. It’s called… I something like “Commensal.”

A Week of Change

April 22nd, 2006 -- Posted in General | Comments Off

So this past week marks a few anniversaries of change.  It was on April 19th, 2000 that we became home owners for the first time…  Last year during this time Doug was offered three jobs, one of which is where he is now… which started quite a series of changes.  This past year has seemed like such a blur to me… I spent a lot of the summer packing, driving back and forth looking for houses, going for job interviews… and then the fall and winter have been spent figuring out what a teacher does!  I haven’t taken pictures in soooo long.  Not that I am a photographer but it is a way that I sometimes pause and look at things - I need to get back into that.  It has been exciting to see this town in a new light.. I keep seeing things I haven’t seen before and I remember that I have never had a spring here, and I didn’t really have a fall here either as we were renting north of the city.  Anyway, I am hoping for an uneventful year ahead where I can get my feet back on the ground, unpack the rest of my boxes, and find homes for the stuff scattered throughout the basement!

Things to Ponder

April 22nd, 2006 -- Posted in General | Comments Off

I got an e-mail with many questions to ponder so I thought I would post a few for your intellectual stimulation…

  • If corn oil is made from corn, and vegetable oil is made from vegetables, what is baby oil made from?
  • Why do people point to their wrist when asking for the time, but don’t point to their crotch when they ask where the bathroom is?
  • Can a hearse carrying a corpse drive in the carpool lane?
  • Why do toasters always have a setting that burns the toast to a horrible crisp, which no decent human being would eat?
  • Why is it that people say they “slept like a baby” when babies wake up like every two hours?
  • What disease did cured ham actually have?
  • How important does a person have to be before they are considered assassinated instead of just murdered?

See… I’m not 6!

Okay, I just want to prove that I don’t act 6 like everyone says….

You Are 21 Years Old
20-29: You are a twentysomething at heart. You feel excited about what’s to come… love, work, and new experiences.

What a Deal!

I have seen lots of billboards and commercials for The Great Wolf in Niagara Falls. It is a hotel with an indoor water park. The commercial makes it look huge and awesome so I thought I would look it up. The smallest room they have is a Queen bed with a Queen pull-out couch sort of a suite as it has a divider in the middle. Anyway, that room I couldn’t get a price on. But the next room up, is the Family Suite…. for a measly $355/night, you can have that room. But don’t worry, it includes your water park pass as well! HOLY COW! Who would pay that for a night!! If you are in Niagara there is so much you could be doing! I guess it’s a great place for kids but there are many other cheaper places. Remember, this is the small room and when I did reservations it was hard to find openings for this room. I forget the most expensive but some of my quotes for 2 nights were $1200! Yikers!

Profitable Day

April 17th, 2006 -- Posted in General | Comments Off

We didn’t make any purchases but we were finally able to get some estimates on things we need.  Someone was in the area so swung by for an air conditioner estimate - turns out they also install water softeners!  After he left we saw that they install fireplaces (a small dream for our basement…).  We also managed to get an estimate on our ‘Swiss Chalet’ curtains for our kitchen.  You’ll know we mean if you check out your local Swiss Chalet or Tim Horton’s.  The nice thing is, we can think about it and then just call in anything we decide on.  We would like to get a few more estimates… hopefully people will call back soon!

Happy Easter!

April 16th, 2006 -- Posted in General | Comments Off

Happy Easter everyone!  We spent the weekend at my parents - what great weather it has been this weekend!  We spent Friday….  relaxing and watching T.V.  Of course Doug and I waited until it was dark to take a walk around the neighbourhood and check out the houses.  We keep getting lost when we go there as there are new streets added each week!  Saturday Doug and I went shopping - it was quite successful!  Our last few shopping trips have ended with no purchases so Doug was happy to FINALLY find new shoes and a new coat.  I got a skirt and a memory stick… and binders… and spent my Michael’s coupon.  Doug and my Dad made wonderful breaksfasts each morning and we had wonderful homecooked meals with our favourites (chocolate milk, hasbrown casserole, jelly salad!).  I have done no work this weekend which has been good for the soul.  Doug has done a little and is now back into full work mode.  Tomorrow we hope for another successful shopping trip as we need to find some curtains for our naked windows!

Literacy

I met another author and illustrator today at school. Werner Zimmermann was fantastic! He is my 3rd author this year and they have all been amazing. I don’t know why I think that they would be boring speakers but they have all broken the stereotype. He had the group in awe for the full 45 minutes! He kept drawing while he told various stories about himself. It also turns out that one of his characters takes after a farmer from my parents church! Funny. Anyway, he was great and I look forward to seeing some more authors in the next few weeks as it is author’s month at our school. Brock, come out and support the book fair on April 27th!

Popping in..

April 11th, 2006 -- Posted in General | Comments Off

Just popping in to say hi.  I haven’t written much as I haven’t had too much to report on.  Doug and I are at the start of our work-a-holic week.  He has a project to finish and I have lots of catching up to do.  He is starting at 7 and coming home by 7… I usually leave by 7:30 and am home by 7 as well.  So…  we try to say hello to each other when we pass in the night.  I had a lovely weekend at my parents.  I started my income tax but need to find a few more things (my tax bill from our old house.. Hmm..).  Well, off to work I go - high of 17 so it should be a beautiful day!

Well, that’s interesting…

3 blades? Then 4? Now 5? What next? (Uhh, 6?)

I thought it’d plateau at 3, but apparently your grandchildren will be shaving with 14 blades

Lucky me

It was funny to do a search on Google Reader and find this link to how to code 99 Bottles of Beer in various programming languages. I’m not sure what the FS refers to, but Meditech’s Magic language is what I work with all day.

“Fight progress. Use Meditech.”
“If it was good enough for grandpa, it’s good enough for me - Meditech”
“Meditech - A giant leap forward into the 80’s”
“Meditech - Yesterday’s technology today”

The code differs from what I use, but it’s gotta be somewhat similar due to the accuracy of those quotes! :)
