It’s funny looking back at my childhood and the things I did that I thought were hilarious…my parents did not. Now that I am supposed to be an adult, I can see how the humour might be lost in certain situations. A few examples:
playing dead just outside the bathroom when your dad comes home from work
shaking up pop cans and taking them to your parents in the carpeted T.V. room (makes me wonder about where the ‘open pop cans in the kitchen rule came from…)
These were a few thoughts that made me giggle today on my drive home from work. Funny how we think differently at various ages…

I think Canadian athletes are some of the happiest most perky most enthusiastic and cheerful gold medal winners and Olympic champions - take for example, Clara Hughes and Chandra Crawford. Clara and Cindy Klassen’s enthusiasm even infected the silver medal winner from Germany, Claudia Pechstein. I think the enthusiasm and sheer ecstasy they demonstrate exemplifies the Olympic spirit and what sports should really be all about. We start believing the NHL, MLB, NFL athletes, and the stupid things that happen with them are the epitome of sport, but the Olympics clarify that that’s really entertainment, along the same lines as WWE and Nick & Jessica.

When you hate something so much you just have to do something. Here’s the letter I sent to Yoplait as a result of their recent commercials:
Please pull your recent commercials off TV! The “listen to your mouth” commercials are so annoying. I have vowed to (and do so) change the channel everytime they come on. Please don’t think that they are successful since I know the company who made them, rather realize that I have vowed to not purchase Yoplait products for a time proportional to how long I feel these commercials are overplayed. If I see that they continue beyond the end of the Olympics, I feel I must write to CBC (and any other networks that play these commercials) and inform them that they lose me for 10+ minutes everytime they play these commercials. I have nothing against your products, but your commercial is turning me against your company. Thank you.

A great pianist passed away suddenly yesterday while in concert. I had seen Anthony perform a couple of times and he has such an amazing testimony (hands severely burned as a child and went on to be an incredible piano player!). It makes you wonder what God’s plans are - he was 44. He has left a great legacy.

A Kingston murder is finally solved. And this quote sure makes it sound like the police are taking credit for manna from heaven:
Police finally solved the case late last year when Esford admitted to killing his wife by beating her and throwing her down the stairs.
Either they solved it, and when confronted Esford confessed, or Esford confessed and the case is no longer unsolved. It’s just funny how the media can write things in such a bizarre way.

I hate taking my lunch to work. Ideally I would love to come home for lunch… but since that isn’t going to happen, what do people pack in their lunch? I have access to EVERYTHING - microwave, toaster oven, oven, stove… so any ideas are helpful. Just need to get remotivated with ideas…

My morning didn’t start too well - as I was leaving I couldn’t get the garage door to go down. I would press the button, it would go down a few inches and back up it would go. I got out and did it from inside and it finally worked. Then back in the car, had to stop at the end of the driveway… only to get stuck! Luckily the house beside us is under construction - a nice boy came out and helped me. I was suprised that he did it all on his own! I thanked him profusely wishing I could do more! So I wasn’t really in a bad mood but it did set me up wondering what today would be like. THEN it was FREEZING out today with the wind! I had double yard duty today (can’t complain too much as the EA’s do double duty every day…)… I had a full length down coat on and was still cold. I started my evaluation process today - there are three parts. You have an initial meeting (which was today), an observation (on Monday) and then a post-observation meeting. So the big day is on Monday. She made me feel at ease … and with my class you can expect anything!
Well, we are off to a party tonight and then I am going in to work on Saturday to do more work! Ick. March Break is coming though…

Happy Heart Day all! I spent the day at a workshop! I am happy to report that my lucky streak might be back! It had been quite a few years since I had won anything until Christmas when I won the espresso maker (memo to Doug: Don’t drink 4 espressos in a row - inhibits sleep!). Then today I won a book! It was between two of us (there were two prizes) - one was a $40 ‘teacher’ book and the other just a storybook. My friend was ready to take me out for the ‘teacher book’ - luckily I already owned it so I let her have it. I’m sad that I missed Valentine’s with my class - it’s always fun to see them exchange cards and open their bag! Oh well, I’ll get mine when I get back on Thursday. I also got THE PERFECT Valentine card from my parents - it had “Amish Candy Hearts” Thou Art Hot, U Churn My Butter, Let’s Plow, 4 Keepeth, and Rock My Buggy. Too funny! I love Amish culture (Probably because it’s everything I couldn’t be - a hard labourer, living without plumbing and heat!). Well, there are about 32 various random thoughts of the day…

Schools in Northeast have quietly been adding “snowshoeing” to Physical Education curriculum in past years. That’s gonna come in mighty handy
Uhh, snowshoeing was in my high school phys ed classes every year from grade 9 to grade 12. It was normal for us - we also had hockey and lacrosse and cross-country skiing - good Canadian sports. It’s funny what Americans find funny. I wouldn’t be surprised if northern provinces had dog sledding and ice fishing… or maybe those are too every-day-activity to be included.

No, this is not a lust-based post, but rather a cheer for the Italian women’s hockey team! Not only did they survive playing a team 2 levels above their own, a country with something like a thousand times more women players, but the goalie made the 3rd star with 50 saves, and the team was in tears afterwards - not because they lost 16-0, but because they felt they competed right through to the end. Talk about loving the game, fully appreciating the skill and challenge provided by the opposition, and simply being happy to have an opportunity like this! What Canadian Friday night pickup team wouldn’t love to play the Stanley Cup champions - even if it meant losing miserably, in front of millions of viewers - it’s the love of the game, the essence of the sport of hockey, and the ultimate sportsmanship. And supposedly the Canadian women earned fans during practice before the game by being simply Canadian.

What a nice day today was. I met two friends for lunch at Anna Mae’s (a fantastic Mennonite restaurant in the middle of…. farm land). Tricia and Judy are friends from camp. We realized that this marks the 10 year anniversary of our college graduations. Yikes! Anyway, after lunch we did some shopping in Millbank and then in Waterloo. I wanted to take pictures today as the farms looked awesome and pristine in the snow but I was running late and didn’t get a chance to stop. *sniff*. I did see some great sites though - I saw lots of Amish out on sleighs, pony carts, and just trotting around town. It was neat. I also managed to find a curtain - our old house had two windows and our new house has three and I only had two… I found them half price so managed to find one in our pattern. I just need to find a curtain rod - it seems no one has the small ones I am looking for. Anyway, it was a beautiful day with friends and I hope everyone was out enjoying the great weather.

If Martin was blamed for improprieties in Chretien’s government, shouldn’t Harper be responsible for improprieties in Mulroney’s? Wouldn’t the media just love that - then we could throw away another couple of years paying for a government who will accomplish nothing as they attempt to refocus the public off a supposed scandal and back onto politics. Then again, that would probably be better than what the Conservatives are proposing.

The school year is half over now - Friday was the 100th day of school and there are 194 days. I am surviving. I had my first field trip this week - it was REALLy far. We went to the pool - it’s in the building. We did take some the round about way outdoors so they don’t learn the secret passage ways. We had a great time and I’m sad that the pool isn’t open until 7pm! I would love to go swimming more regularly. First report cards were done before Christmas… I’m working on the second term ones right now - Wow, I’m already on to seconds too!

How cool is this?
Continuing the tradition, Firefox 2 will use a pre-release code name taken from a public park. Bon Echo Provincial Park (http://www.ontarioparks.com/english/bone.html) is located in Ontario, Canada. The name literally translates to “good echo”, and reflects how it is our goal echoes that of Firefox 1, once again focusing on improving the browsing experience for our users, making it simple, effective, fast and useful.
Bringing together the absolute best of both worlds!

Or, maybe this would be a better gift for Jenn’s birthday.

As I am checking my e-mail this morning I get an MSN message from my friend (who works 15 minutes away from my school) announcing that her school is closed. She said she got a call - I proceed to check my phone - no call. Hmm… I check busdelay.com - no information! When I get to school someone said buses were cancelled…. It turns out the other schools in the area where ALL students are bused, those schools are closed. But not ours. 8/10 of my students are bused. I did have 4 students today… so can’t complain. But a day off would have been nice too.

Just when you think you finally have a handle on things, everything piles up! I just realized report cards are due in three weeks - during this time we have swimming, I have 5 days of workshops, I have my evaluation, I just finished IEP’s (more reporting), a classroom lunch, and it just keeps piling on! Yikers. Bring on that time management stuff…

Just when I was getting used to spring, winter decided to come back. Not that I am complaining, I like winter too… It has been snowing in some form for 0ver 24 hours here. We heard the snow was coming so we zipped out to Burlington first thing yesterday morning for our $1.00 IKEA breakfast (and a few returns). We then went to the teacher store, Chapters, Lee Valley, Staples, and Lick’s! And I finally remember to bring our Lick’s coupon!!! Yeah. Just for those interested readers, I didn’t see the Canadian Tire coupon special at the Burlington Lick’s. I did get a great deal on Post-it notes at Staples - gotta love clearance tables.
