Sorry, Nausea, Party, Lights Camera Action… (it makes more sense if you read it in reverse)

November 29th, 2005 -- Posted in General | 2 Comments »

Sorry that sillyspot’s been down lately. Stupid spammers. Our hoster (Shelagh) has been working hard to not let them take us down - she’s the best.

News:

  • I bought an Xbox - not the new 360, just the regular old one. I got it off a colleague from work for $150, and he threw in a bunch of games (I’d list them, but I forget) - let’s see, Halo (not Halo 2), Oddworld (I think that’s the name), a car racing (GT something or other), Ghost Recon, a flying game, and a couple of other first person shooters. I’m having fun, but I need to get some silly games for Jenn and I to play together (and to offset the nausea and violent anger I feel after putting bullets in, through, and all around humans and non-human thingoids)
  • You haven’t forgotten about our party on December 17th, have you? We’re thinking of somewhere around 4 p.m. till 10 p.m., but if you’re only available before that, feel free to pop in anytime (that is, after 10:00 a.m.). RSVP would be really appreciated, so I can ensure there’s enough food.
  • I may have a free projector. We think it’s just the bulb that’s gone, and it’s $400 to buy a new one - so, $400 for a HDTV enabled $4300 projector isn’t too shabby. It’s no longer in production, and is only 1024×768, but if it works, and lasts me for a couple of years I’ll be happy.

Oh, Jenn’s home - gotta go make some supper.

This is where we lived in September and October. Looks like it is still for sale.

    Advent!

    November 27th, 2005 -- Posted in General | 1 Comment »

I woke up this morning and realized that it was the first day of advent! Wooho! Christmas is coming!!!

Oh, and our webpage and e-mail seem to be having technical difficulties. If you send us an e-mail and it bounces back can you try again? Seems that the server is down a lot lately… we’re looking in to it.

I’m off to see Ciska!!! Yeah! I haven’t seen her in at least a year… so should be fun! We are going to the Butterfly Conservatory with her girls.

    Night Out

    November 25th, 2005 -- Posted in General | No Comments »

We had a lovely night out - we saw Harry Potter and also hit the Canadian Tire sale! It was quite crowded but most people were festive and friendly. I think it’s still early enough that people aren’t in the panic mode for gifts. We had a whole strategy - I waited at cash 3 while he waited for the 6pm deadline when the loot would be for sale. I hid behind another person with the same strategy… Anyway, off to bed!

    Kitchen Table

Here is a picture of our new kitchen table!

    Too Much

    November 19th, 2005 -- Posted in General | No Comments »

I guess I ate too much Jalepeno Jack popcorn… I don’t like it anymore! It has been my favourite Kernels flavour for YEARS! Since there was no Kernels in Kingston I used to buy LOTS and eat it in a limited number of sittings - and now I am sick of it. How sad! I will have to adopt a new Kernels flavour I guess.

Sorry for the limited amount of postings lately - I was doing my first set of report cards ever!!! Handed them in yesterday and now I am recouperating - it was like writing a paper - procrastination at its finest! Luckily the three of us spec ed teachers hung around and ate all night together. Oh we did some work too! Not looking to Monday when I get “my paper back”. It’s just like school…

I’m starting to get some Christmas spirit! Hard to believe it is only 5 weeks away! I better get cracking! We ordered a kitchen table today but it won’t be in until February. That is fine since our dinette seems to be the only place for a tree at the moment! Yeah!

    Hockey Thanks Fans

    November 12th, 2005 -- Posted in Commentary | 2 Comments »

What’s with Montreal eliminating the “Thank You Fans” messages just off the blue lines? Maybe there was too much English, and the language police raised a stink. I hadn’t noticed this, but apparently Toronto was the only arena to have anything other than the standard - they had “Thank You Leaf Fans”. Sigh… that’s Toronto for you.

Sun Shining, Java Perking - I Love Weekends

November 12th, 2005 -- Posted in General | Comments Off

I haven’t started a pot of coffee, though after waking up at 3:30 and not falling back asleep (until 3:30 this afternoon when I had a 1 hour nap), I think I’d be wise to do so. And my oh my, what a beautiful November day today was. I got out for a walk, though it wasn’t much of an adventure, just some trails in the area. But in any case, I can say that I savoured a bit of the day. The rest of the day was spent installing Solaris (the Sun OS) on a SPARC server (1 Gb RAM, dual processor - not bad for virtually “dumpster diving”) - so now I’ve a Linux (Mandrake) box, Windows (2000) box, and a Solaris box. I’ve got a couple of other servers waiting for me to snag ‘em, so I’ll probably do another Linux, then re-format my Mandrake, or setup a Windows server and re-format my Windows. Oh the possibilities. And I got new glasses so my eyes are buggy.

    (but they’re black)

    Oh deer…

    Overheard in New York

Tween chick #1: So when we went to Canada, we had deer.
Tween chick #2: Really? Doesn’t it have a special name too?
Tween chick #1: Yeah. Verizon, like the phones.

How Much Do I Love Thee, Home Depot?

    November 12th, 2005 -- Posted in Shopping | 4 Comments »

We have a new Home Depot coming to Guelph (the store apparently doesn’t open for at least a couple of weeks), and I have mixed feelings about it. I love wandering the aisles of Home Depot, because it gives me so many ideas of things I can do, and I get so curious about all the pieces and trinkets and dodads I see. On the other hand, it is Home Depot and Guelph till now has seemed to be such a nice quaint small big town. A few months after Home Depot opens, a Walmart will open just down the street. Thankfully, neither of these is all that close to our house (as to lend itself to the annoyance of terrible drivers so prevalent with Walmart), but still only 10 minutes away as to be convenient enough. There’s no doubt that I’d prefer Rona over Home Depot (though I’ve always had better success with Home Depot, I like Rona’s Canadianism). It may be tempting to support the Home Depot in Cambridge (still relatively convenient, but in a location most suited for big box stores) as much as possible. But for the big purchases (sheets of drywall and plywood, 2×4’s, decking materials, etc.), I’ll sucumb and buy from the local Home Depot.

We Like to Party, We Like to Party…

    November 12th, 2005 -- Posted in Friends | 4 Comments »

We hosted our first party, and it was a success. There were 3 people who said they’d come but didn’t, but there were still 13 people that did. I was scrambling around like a chicken with it’s head cut off (actually, it’s finger - I’ve cut my hands 3 times this week, what’s with that??) and didn’t welcome Jenn home too well (Jenn was a great help with cleaning up my mess and cleaning the bathrooms, and cutting up the bread, and … she did alot!), but by 5:15 people started showing up and the dinner was all ready.

  • Mushroom, onion, and bacon baked cheese dip (with cream cheese and swiss cheese) with homemade bread
  • Spinach dip in a bread ball (courtesy of Sandy, who also brought wine)
  • Raspberry spinach salad with sugared almonds - the sweet crunchiness is unbeatable
  • Waldorf pasta salad - the light, mellow creamy texture nicely complemented the flavourful stir frys
  • Candied yams - sweet (though I must confess I slightly undercooked them)
  • “To Stir, With Love” - a chicken veggy tangy stir fry (with a hint of sesame oil, and apricot jam)
  • Beef Tandori stir fry - a mild curry, with strong flavour
  • Coconut basmati rice - very bright, with raisins and a cinnamon taste
  • Glazed orange cake - mild, moist, and light
  • Peanut butter chocolate cheesecake - always a hit, sure to top off your tummy
  • Carrot cake with cream cheese icing (courtesy of Roh and Jen, who also brought wine)
Bryan and Amanda brought some beer and wine, too. And the GOLD (Guelph Online Documentation) team bought us a beautiful snowman plate - Jenn adores it! Thanks Cheryl, Jean, Sandy, Margie and Elizabeth for coming! It was a fantastic event - we’ve got lots of food left over, so if anyone wants to pop by for a visit, there may be some left to share. And beer and wine like you wouldn’t believe. I didn’t even get to crack open the after dinner drinks. Oh well - next time (or tonight, whichever comes first :)

So lightning struck a house on our old street in Kingston! A little too close for my liking if we were still there! Eeks. The article is here .

    The Past

    November 7th, 2005 -- Posted in General | No Comments »

I think I have mentioned how it bothers me that there are some people that we will never see again - and never know it. Well, yesterday I ran into one of them!

To back track, we went to two shows for the price of none yesterday. We got free tickets to the leisure and travel show yesterday (which was all travel and no leisure - but I won a bag!). As we were leaving the show, someone from the cottage show gave us their vendor pass! So into the cottage show we went… It was a good show - better than the one we went to in Ottawa in the spring. Anyway, it was there that I saw the old camp director from CH! Brian!!! I’m going back to 1990, 1991… anyway, nice to see him again.

    New Nephew!

Congratulations to Patti and Clarence on the birth of their son Kurtis - unfortunately for Patti he was 11 pounds 9 ounces!

    Good news, bad news.

    November 7th, 2005 -- Posted in General | No Comments »

Good news: ~ 6 months ago, “the government” mandated that all new water heaters must be installed with a regulator that the installing plumber will use to limit the temperature of hot water outflow from taps to 120 degrees. Ours peaked at 100 degrees. The water heater guy said “it’s not my problem”, the builder has said “look for a key, now look again, can you look one more time?” So I said screw it, literally, and I used pliers and tightened the bolt myself. Seems we have hot water now.
Bad news: my computer is dead again. Sigh. I’ll pick up a Sun server tomorrow and install Solaris on it. Hopefully I’ll have better luck, and then I can move my hard drive over and “cannibalize” my crappy PC.

    Jenn’s home. Gotta go.

    Christmas Open House

    November 6th, 2005 -- Posted in Cooking, Christmas | 1 Comment »

Keep December 17th open. We may be having a Christmas Open House that day - probably during the afternoon and/or evening. Lots of food and wine and music. Confirmation of date/time will be forthcoming. It would be great if y’all could come. Let me know ASAP if you can’t make it. Requests for food items will be considered.

    Life

    November 6th, 2005 -- Posted in General | No Comments »

So life is just zooming by and I can’t seem to catch up. Doug was mentioning what our new town will look like in winter - I don’t even know what our new town looks like now! I leave early and come back when it’s dark and I actually don’t ever drive through town as we live on the outskirts! Some day - like next summer, I’ll have time to explore.

I have finally found some things that I have been looking for. I knew we had a curtain that would go in our bathroom - the window is right on the front porch so didn’t want people seeing me pee! So the curtain is now up. I also found my huge collection of stickers - too bad as I am off to the outlet next weekend…. now I know I don’t need too many. It has been fun (in some ways) unpacking as it is stuff that I might not have seen in five months or so. Fragile stuff I packed away early and sent to my parents for a little TLC. It’s nice to have all my stuff back again - it’s the little things that make me happy - my paper weight, my fisherman, MY BED! So all is well with the world again. I just wish I had the time to enjoy it all. I try to savour the moments here but wish I had a few more.

Work is going well and I am liking the new job. But once again, not enough time to get everything ready and also I have too many ideas running through my head and often forget them or don’t have time to implement, or don’t have the right resources. Anyway, all will come together by June I’m sure.

    Finally - Pictures

    November 2nd, 2005 -- Posted in Pictures | 4 Comments »

Jenn’s been bugging me to upload some pictures so here we go:
Here’s the exterior front of our house. We took a bunch of other pictures, but none of them look all that good. They were taken while unpacking, so crap is all over the place (yes, we put pooh in storage and when we unpacked it, we decided to spread it all around - nice initiation for our new house. Unfortunately, it’s all through the carpet so we don’t really have a new house smell anymore). Anyone up for a visit?

One of the rooms is the “Man Room”. Here’s my seguay (an easy word to say - not so easy to spell, too lazy to dictionary.com it)… today I picked up my new (used) monitor from work. 21 inches and brighter and crisper than I’ve seen. It’s amazing. I’m running out of room, now that my computer is working again, and I’ve got Jenn’s old computer (gotta come up with a better name for it) as a backup, and I may have a couple of servers coming home in the next couple of days, too. One of the servers is coming with a monstrous monitor of it’s own, and the other one can go with my faded out 17 incher. Then I just need something for the WBT I want to try get running with terminal services. The major mind cruncher is how I can build a desk to accommodate all this and still look freakin’ cool.

And here’s a nice picture Jenn took of a pumpkin patch. I like the colors:
