Doug’s sick computer is alive! Yeah! We were worried all three of our computers were sick as they all had various problems this week but as of this morning, all are healthy and fine! Yeah!!
We are off to IKEA today to go shopping! It will be so nice to FINALLY go shopping and be able to buy. We have looked at stuff for the last five months and didn’t buy anything as we didn’t want to pack/move/store anything. I think we will try to enjoy their 99 cent breakfast as well.
I had a super busy week at work! I had three evenings booked with work activities - parent interviews, report card workshop, and FREE dinner! It was a union new teacher dinner with free stuff so I couldn’t turn that down.
Lots of random thoughts. The house beside us has just started being built so it’s neat to look down out of our kitchen and watch the building going on. It won’t be completed until March so lots of time to watch!
Can’t believe it’s -3 this morning…. Brrrrrrr….
Here’s our house. (Dumb yahoo photo won’t allow me to display the actual photo… maybe I’ll stick with Flickr next time)
I chartered a flight to take this picture… it’s only a picture worth a couple hundred dollars. (Just kidding - a friend just sent it to me, seems he does that sorta thing)
We went to ‘friend day’ at the church that some of Doug’s colleagues go to. We scored big! We each got a welcome package with a mug, pen, candies, and church info. Who cares how the service went, I got free stuff! On a side note, the music was good and the pastor is quite funny. Except the pastor reminded Doug of the guy from Princess Bride (the voice at least of the short bald guy who tries to outsmart people) and he kept giggling throughout the service. Oops!
We went shopping after church and I discovered all the box stores in Cambridge! Who knew they had so many! Michael’s isn’t so far away after all.
Well, off to unpack some more….
We’re up and running with Vonage - unlimited local and provincial long distance for $34.99, with tonnes of neat features. Now, if only I actually enjoyed using a phone, I could play with the features. Email me and I’ll tell you our number - it’s only got 3 numbers (1, 3, 4) in a 7 number sequence (just like our cell phone (4, 5, 6)).
Our hot water heater doesn’t really heat the water very hot. We’ve cranked it up to the max, and with it almost to the top it was still tepid. We’ll call the maintenance guys on Monday if it’s no better tomorrow.
I installed the vent pipe for the dryer, and Jenn did our first load. It’s kinda loud, so we’ll either get used to it or I’ll figure out some solution with rubber mats, insulation, and/or cabinets.
The wireless router thing is something I think I’ll blame on Bell. See the previous post’s comments.
We’re really doing well getting unpacked, but my problem is my appetite has disappeared. We went to Licks for lunch which I loved, but I’m not craving any food at all. Maybe I need to start some baking - a nice coffee cake or something. Or a loaf of bread and some chili. I made french toast this morning on the new stove with a new pan, and it was amazing. Maybe grocery shopping would help me.
Still no visitors - except for the cable guy, movers and delivery people, 2 solicitors, 1 guy dumping garbage in the work garbage bin (I scared him off - made him feel like a cheap crook), and we met our future neighbour… but no personal visits yet. Sigh. Oh well - we’ll start dragging people in when all the boxes are away and the counters are clear and the floor can be swept and the carpets vacuumed.
Oh yeah - I gotta do some pictures. Tomorrow. We’re going to try a church here in Guelph - it’s friend day, and my friends Jean and Margie invited us. We wanted to go anyways, so this is the great opportunity. It’s kinda scary how long it’s been since I’ve been to church.
I got the internet to work through one router, now I just have to figure out how to get it to work from the laptop, through the wireless router, to the wired router, to the internet. Any tips/ideas on configuring a second router to work?
I’ve got Vonage all signed up, but I have a minor glitch (namely, I get a dial tone but the calls don’t connect) for which I need to test Vonage’s proposed solution.
The movers arrived yesterday and finished up by mid-morning (carrying one couch cushion at a time!), then the appliance guys arrived and in 20 minutes had 5 appliances in (some of the appliances amazingly made it through the door!), most of our kitchen stuff is moved in, so now it’s mostly the bedrooms and basement/garage to go.
I really have to take some pictures, except I’ll have to try to find the batteries for the camera. Sigh.
5 months waiting, and we’re in our house. The cable guy came last night (priorities, eh?) so we got our internet connection and though we don’t have our TVs yet, I can listen to the digital radio stations. We’ve moved in a bit of stuff - stuff we’ve had out of storage for a few months, and it’s on the shelves and in the cupboards - mostly because we were bored, and partly because we crave the immense foreboding job of unpacking.
Some sad things:
The movers are coming in an hour (more about them soon - after we get our stuff back!), my appliances this afternoon, we’ll do our final pickup from the ol’ house tonight, and then we settle in. I’ll post some pictures too. Anyone want to be in them?
We had our walk through tonight - now it’s frustrating because it is in move in condition and we aren’t in it!! Less than 48 hours though! wOOHOO! There is one small inconvenience. It appears that the city has decided this is the week to pour sidewalks - which means that our driveway is blocked at the moment. Hopefully by Friday when the movers come, it is open again… or it could be a little tricky.
An aside:
My new favourite habit is Coke Zero. It is a diet coke that tastes like REAL coke! It is awesome!!!
I also did my first batch of IEP’s this week. Woohoo - what a responsible adult teacher I am.
Also realized that report cards are due in four weeks! Eeeks!
Guess that is all for now! Will write again… from the new house!!! Visitors always welcome - especially if they bring Coke Zero, pizza, or Krispy Kremes.
In an effort to kill as much time as possible in the days leading up to the move (it’s painful to allow one’s mind to wander to issues and thoughts of one’s new house, when it’s still unattainable), I went to the movies. I saw Serenity last week, and as usually happens, when one says it’s the greatest movie, I’m somewhat disappointed. I expect a 10, and a 9 is disheartening. This time I went to a movie I had heard really nothing about, so now I will give it a score and it will probably disappoint you now if you see it. Quid pro quo. Take that. The movie was “The History of Violence”, and it was probably the best movie I’ve seen in at least a couple of years - probably since Kill Bill(s), or Snatch. It was violent (surprise!!) and wildly sexual with 100 decibel swearing, but all aspects were totally appropriate. My pessimistic anticipation of over-hollywoodized storylines and character development were pleasantly disappointed. We had watched Flight of the Pheonix and Monster-in-law last week, and they didn’t disappoint (thereby disappointing me). But THOV as beautiful - from actor selection, to quality of acting, to the aforementioned indulgences, made it wholly entertaining. Now go ahead and see it and be disappointed and disagree with me. Quid pro quo.
My school is selling lots of magazine subscriptions at great prices. If anyone is interested in anything send me an e-mail by the end of the week… Lots of great deals on many popular magazines - computers, crafts, sports, etc…
Check out this page for titles available.
Not that we haven’t been counting down for 68 days already but now we are down to the lasts! We had our last Thursday night sleep at our rental… this is our last weekend at our rental… woohoo! Can’t wait to move in now! Luckily I have tons of work to do this weekend. Reports reports reports. Once those go home on Tuesday I can pack pack pack! Woohoo! I will be doing packing this weekend as well. We do our walk through on Tuesday night to make sure all is well with the new place and then we close on Thursday! We are going to take our mattresses and sleep over on Thursday night and then the movers come on Friday. Unpacking will be an adventure to say the least. Because I packed over three months things ended up in unique places. You also have weird spaces to fill in boxes so you run around the house looking for anything to fill the space. Many boxes are labeled “surprise inside”…
Just wondering if anyone is doing anything this Halloween or the weekend before??
So last weekend, something happened that left me high all week. I got hit on. Yep, broad daylight this guy told me I was cute and wanted me to go to the Leaf game with him as he had an extra ticket. Well, it was also with a bus load of other guys… Then he asked if I was married. Oops.. he forgot to look. I told him to look for a ring first next time. I was flattered…
BUT… what stupid girl with go with a bus load of strange men???
How many people can actually torture their mother-in-law, get away with it, and be thanked for doing it??? Well, this weekend, Doug has had that honour as he puts my Mom through the paces. She had a knee replacement over a week ago and he has come to do some physio with her. It would appear that they physios she has been seeing weren’t too thorough so now Doug gets to torture her to make sure she gets all of her exercises in. She has had two torture sessions this weekend and perhaps he’ll have to come back for some more this week as well. Quite interesting dynamics!
In the newly released 2005 Acute Care Hospital Report Card, Guelph General Hospital was rated one of only 4 hospitals in the province as “High Performing” - the others being St.Mary’s in Kitchener, Headwaters in Orangeville, and Kingston General. Having also experienced Kingston General, I am of the opinion that GGH is superior. The other hospital I left, Lennox and Addington County General Hospital, opted not to participate. I think that alone says something, but even based on my experiences, I can say with certainty, I have clearly moved to a much superior organization. I am proud of my hospital. Politics exist no matter where you go, but GGH is a leader in the province in many respects, and lacking in few (if any) areas.
Hard to believe that the first month of school has already come and gone! I still feel like it should be the first week! I had my first open house this week… which happened to be the day that we had no power at home - and because we are on septic, etc here, we had no water!!! So my first open house and I didn’t shower… nice.
I also thought that Brock was a bit dramatic about his death colds. Well, I got my first Acton Death Cold and it has been over a week of misery! I took one day off of work and slept most of the day. I take meds but I still have a runny nose… and I’m still exhausted. Everyone at school is getting it as well. Hopefully this isn’t a regular thing!
Less than three weeks until we move! wOOHOOOO! We are going for a walk through this weekend we hope. It is locked all the time now so we can’t sneak in. It looks like a real house now as the brick and siding is all up.
