Birthday Specials

February 27th, 2005 -- Posted in Holidays, General | 1 Comment »

Well, 8 sleeps until my birthday! I just read yesterday that this new scrapbook store in town gives you a discount on your birthday! You get your age in percent off up to 50% ! So, 30% is a pretty good deal. I haven’t been to this store yet so will scope it out this week to see if there are any cools toys I want. Does anyone know of other places you get birthday deals - particularly restaurants. There is one in town that gives you 10 dollars off… I’m looking to find a new place to go. Casey’s also has a deal but we don’t have one here in town.

One of those days…

February 24th, 2005 -- Posted in School, Shopping, General | No Comments »

It was a day where I woke up feeling a little blue… I was dragging a little… But I got to placement on time. So, we are standing around chatting and the teacher says that she has made an executive decision… To send me, to represent her class…. at the SCHOLASTIC WAREHOUSE SALE…. tomorrow. I said “It’s not tomorrow, it’s right now!!!!”. So, off I went to pick up books for her, the EA, and umm… myself. I had the teacher’s cellphone to confer on a few things but then when I called, I remembered they were in gym class!! So I hung around, picked up more books, for a half hour until their gym class was back! Anyway, I was feeling blue that I wouldn’t be able to go since I was on placement and then after school I have a class… But there is still the HUGE warehouse sale in May… Hmm….

Life is Good.

We went out for dinner to Shoeless Joes tonight. I ordered a sweet chili (with vegetables and noodles) and Jenn had a club sandwich (sigh). My meal came with rice instead of noodles, so when I asked about it our server offered to remake it. I said no, because it still tasted really good and I hate good food getting thrown out. He advocated for us, and the manager gave us 10% off - in addition to the buy-1-get-1-free coupon we had. And then we filled out the online comment card and we’re going to win a $3,499 Sony 42″ Grand Wega Widescreen TV on March 1st. What a winner night! Now I just need to have a bath, and watch Gilmore Girls, and fall asleep. Life is good.

Bucket Drums

February 22nd, 2005 -- Posted in School, General | No Comments »

A visiting school performed on bucket drums for us today. Some were garbage cans upside down, others were pails, and they all used drum sticks. They were awesome! It was a grade 7 and 8 group and their rhythm was fantastic! I just kept bopping! Perhaps I’ll have to start a bucket band of my own to accompany me on the guitar!! (see pictures in Doug’s post!).

Babies… 2 of them!

February 19th, 2005 -- Posted in Pictures | 2 Comments »

We have babies! Now we can compete with all the other baby photo blogs! :)
We’re still looking for names for each of them, so any suggestions are appreciated.
This is the smaller of the two. (S)he’s got a wonky fin, but has better color.

(S)he’s larger, dominates the others, seems to have a little more energy, and eats more.

The plant (not in the photos) cost as much as both of the fish, so maybe we should name it too. It’s … uhh, great, and… leafy. Not a fern. Looks kinda like a weed.

Anyone have any advise re. goldfish? I’ve got two bubble makers, and the fish seem more energetic when they’re on. Maybe it’s stressing them out, or maybe they find it fun. They don’t avoid the bubbles. I also had a heater but I almost boiled them to death, so I got rid of that. Apparently, goldfish like it a little cooler, so I think I’ll leave it without. I’m hoping to not have to run a filter, but we shall see if the manual cleaning is too cumbersome. If I do okay with this little 2 gallon tank, I think Jenn will let me buy a nice big one later on.

P.S. Updated our Flickr Album.

Fun in the City!

February 18th, 2005 -- Posted in Misc, General | 1 Comment »

Kingston is hosting it’s first ever FebFest! They have made an ice rink downtown and tomorrow there will be some 3 on 3 hockey games with some of our local NHL people…. Doug Gilmour, Kirk Muller, Don Cherry… Yeah! There is also free skate on the ice later in the day! It should be fun! I guess it’s the closest thing to a hockey season Doug will see …. and hey, if we’re downtown, we can go shopping too! Ron McLean is coming too! Woohoo! Llyod Eisler skated last night but hopefully he’ll make another appearance this weekend!

Please??

February 18th, 2005 -- Posted in Holidays, General | No Comments »

My one request this year is that March Break is warm and that there are no snowstorms during March Break! It has been cold the last few years over March Break which makes shopping not as enjoyable…. and I would love to stroll outside more when I go away. We are going to Frankenmuth again and I would love to walk downtown at night in warmer air and not have to drive between stores at the outlet mall because it’s too cold to walk! Please?? I think it was the first year we went where it was warmer and there were flowers coming out of the ground already… I want that again! Pretty please?? You have a month to warm up…. and you can even snow after that if you have to… just not on my break!

Wasting Money on a Visit

February 17th, 2005 -- Posted in News | No Comments »

A 15-year-old kid gets suspended from school, and he and his class get kicked out of the Governor General’s office when he asks “Is that the lady who spends all the money when the queen comes to visit?” The suspension was reversed, the GG apologized and invited them back again, and suggested that the kid write a 1000 word essay on what the role of the GG should be. He said he’d come for a visit first, then think about the essay.

Rock Star

February 17th, 2005 -- Posted in School, General | No Comments »

My music teacher let us borrow guitars until the end of April… so now is my chance to find out if I am rock star material! I can play one chord so far! I’m not sure what chord it is but it sounds great!

11 days

February 17th, 2005 -- Posted in School, General | No Comments »

11 more days of formal education and I will be a teacher. That is SO scary! I have one class left this week and then don’t have classes again until the end of April. I didn’t really process that most of my fellow students were leaving yesterday and I wouldn’t see them again until April. I start placement on Monday in a behaviour class and am really looking forward to it. This placement is more experiencial and observation so will be a bit of a break. They are on high school hours so I am there early but am done at 3 which will be nice since I have had classes until at least 5:30 twice a week and 7:30 twice a week. So I will get to see Doug again! Yeah! Work to Rule looks like it will be coming in in March or April as well which will make placement a little more interesting. It should be fun trying to figure out what I am doing in five minutes before class starts! I am going back to a grade 1 class for my last placement after March Break.

New Love

February 15th, 2005 -- Posted in General | 3 Comments »

I discovered Merrell shoes this weekend. When I got home I checked out the Shoe Company here and found the perfect pair of Merrell’s. It turns out that my 30 year old feet are starting to hurt and my cheap Payless shoes aren’t helping. But these Merrell’s are fantastic! Can’t wait to wear them. So in follow up to the previous post… I returned the Hush Puppies and got Merrell’s instead.

Busy Weekend

February 14th, 2005 -- Posted in General | 3 Comments »

We did the separate vacation thing this weekend. It is the key to a happy marriage. So off to Brampton I went for the weekend. My weekend began with homemade Shepherd’s Pie … made by my Mom! Yummm! My Mom and I shuffled off for a little bit of shopping as well! Saturday I met Tricia (from camp for all you CH people out there) for lunch. She just bought a house and will be moving to Georgetown in May! For my evening entertainment, I went to the Brampton Symphony. My good friend Merry-Anne was soloing with the symphony. She did a fantastic job! She was only performing in the first half so came and sat with me for the second half. I was sitting with the celebrity and everyone kept coming up to her. Funny thing… my old backyard neighbours were there (they are umm… a little evil). They talked to Merry-Anne like they were long lost friends… and she had no idea who they were. I also ran into a girl from high school. I never run into anyone in Brampton so it was nice to see a friendly face and catch up. She just finished teacher’s college last year and is teaching in Brampton now. On Sunday we went to Terry’s church in Mississauga and saw his cute daughter Abby. My Mom and I have bets on when their next baby is due. I think the official date is late teens of March…. I’m aiming for March 7th and my Mom wants March 20th. They said they can’t name the baby Jenn as there is already a Jenn in the family…. what’s with that??? I think Jenna is a great alternative! After church we went to Solutions - the organization store. It’s fantastic…. the even better news is in their flyer it says that one is coming to Brampton in Spring 2005. The Indigo at Trinity Common is closing so perhaps it will go there. I also popped in on my brother and hung out with the guys for a bit. Oh… we rented “The Notebook”. I love that movie!!!! I decided to stay an extra day and come home during the freezing rain. Luckily it was just rainy most of the way home. When I got past Napanee there were about five accidents as the road just seemed to suddenly freeze. So I took the sideroads home and skipped of to my afternoon class on intrapersonal intelligences…. which I am very high in. Well, that is a lot of rambling but hopefully it made some sense. Some other highlights of my weekend…. Lick’s and Krispy Kreme. I also found some great Hush Puppy shoes so bought those… only to find even better ones on my way home. So I might return these ones and get the ‘cooler’ ones.

Make it Stop!!

February 10th, 2005 -- Posted in Books, General | 3 Comments »

I just read to today that a new Left Behind book is being released March 1st. It is called The Rising. It’s all about what happened before book 1. Who was Capatain Steele’s first love? Was Nicolae a nice kid? NOOOOOOO!!! The series was torturous enough! Make it stop!!!

Lent

What are people giving up for Lent this year? I think I’m going to give up exercise….

… or Gym. Well, phys. ed. was fun today. It was all team games and none of them were really typical sports games that you associate with teams. We did an obstacle course where everyone one but the person at the front and back is blindfolded, crab soccer, Run the Gauntlet, Quidditch, Bombardment, 4 goal soccer with 4 balls … oh we started the class with flag tag. What a fun morning… I’m a little sore now but hopefully will recouperate!

Interviews

February 6th, 2005 -- Posted in General | No Comments »

I am hoping to have an interview in the next month or two and am curious about the most interesting interview questions you have been asked were. I still remember being asked what one of the worst or hardest things I had to do on the job and what I did about it. I had a rather honest and very gross answer…. and they all looked a little shocked, but hey, I got the job!

Movies

February 6th, 2005 -- Posted in Movies | No Comments »

We went to see the movie In Good Company yesterday. It was a good movie to take a guy to as it had some romance (for me) and some business corporate stuff (for him). We also had buttered popcorn! Yummm! What other reason do you go to the show? The theatre was pretty empty and no one was directly in front or behind us. All in all, it was a great movie experience. I give it two thumbs up.

Deed…

February 5th, 2005 -- Posted in General | 1 Comment »

Okay, so here it the expanded version of my ‘good’ deed. Across the store was a guy trying to get his grandfather?? father?? into his walker. The walker was rolling away and he only had his father by the front of his jacket! He asked a girl to go get help (during which time they paged the manager, I went and helped and they were on their merry way before anyone showed up…. LAME!). Anyway, I saw that he was looking desperately around so I offered my help. We got him comfortable back in his walker (I didn’t see how the event started…) and made sure they didn’t need any more help before I left. Oh, he also asked if I worked there… NO… they didn’t hire me 6 years ago! Oh, I’m not bitter. Anyway, so I left. When I did see the ambulance, the gentleman was still in his walker and the son was outside talking with the medics. So, he didn’t appear to be in distress and when he was in the ambulance, it didn’t leave. They were there at least 15 minutes before I left the store. Another dumb thing is here is this man sitting in his walker by the door and all three staff are standing 10 feet away from him. “Are you okay sir?” At least I was chatting him up when I was helping him. Anyway, I hope nothing ever happens to me in that Chapter’s as they were a little slow on the uptake… and no one seemed willing to help someone out who was in obvious distress!
