Wow! I’ve been amazed this week by people! So many people have offered to help me with different programming ideas, or sending me articles for papers, or craft ideas! It’s been great! So to all of you, I say, “Thank you Thank you Thank you!!”

I dunno what to think of this. Maybe it’s just paranoia, maybe it’s just a US problem, or maybe there’s some crackin’ down going on (not that I actually use the stuff!). This morning on CBC, Todd Maffin was talking about Bit Torrent, and on the weekend I got a warning about bandwidth from Cogeco. Then Suprnova goes down (again). Coincidence? I dunno.

Okay… it might not exactly be free… but if you buy Kraft products, you can send away for FREE Crayola stuff. You enter the code inside the product and it tells you what you win. Last year I think I entered all of my codes too late as I got a lot of the ‘free’ computer games you download. But this year I have received 2 packs of Window Writer markers, erasable pencil crayons and decoding markers. Yeah! Doug was a nice boy and bought me the cheese slices that had the giveaway on them! He’s so good to me.

A few years ago Doug and I were on a mailing list for pet peeves. People submitted their pet peeves and then someone compiled them and sent one out each day. We unsubscribed because our peeves were never posted! I would love to hear what others pet peeves are. I think it’s interesting. On of my pet peeves is horns in music… you’re driving along and you hear this honking Mack Truck… and it’s coming from your CD player. Argh. I listen to a lot of dance music… for some reason they like horns. Another one is when your neighbour takes YOUR recycling bin instead of their own…. they aren’t even similar!

Geography was one of those poorly taught (poorly inspired) courses in high school… and I think my performance in the The Geography Olympics reflects this. I scored 10%. Sigh. The only one I got was Afghanistan. How’d you do? [Note: The traffic is really bad, so you may get 500 errors… just keep trying]

TheStar.com - Rogers set to buy SkyDome
The stadium was state of the art when it opened, mostly at taxpayer expense, in 1989 with a final cost of more than $600 million (all figures Canadian). Rogers will buy it from U.S.-based Sportsco International LP (limited partners) for something approaching $30 million.
Or maybe it’s just that Rogers (and the Jays, and therefore, indirectly, Canadian taxpayers) is ripping off some US corporation.
The Jays, with the SkyDome as part of the package to maximize value, will become more attractive to a buyer should anyone wish to come up with the cash to take the money-losing team off Ted Rogers’ hands. He has owned the club for five years, losing large but decreasing amounts on baseball operations
Err… yeah, we’re not going to see that money again.
In the building, the JumboTron and the baseball field are in need of replacement, the field badly so.
It gets better and better. continue reading »

When I was a kid, did I look like this?

People always said I did… especially once I got glasses. It’s the kid off A Christmas Story (”You’ll shoot your eye out!”) aka “the Red Ryder BB Gun story”.

If you are sending parcels to the US and they contain store bought food…. good luck getting it across! There is some form (which I haven’t found yet) that you have to fill out now. If it’s home made goods, that is fine but anything store bought has to meet FDA approval with a prior notice form…. So I think I will be opening my parcel, taking out the food, and wrapping it back up…. again! Argh. If someone knows where to find this form, please let me know.

The Fishbowl: A Mario By Any Other Name
Admit it. You read “adult entertainment” and think “porn”. I dislike the way the word “adult” has been co-opted. Just once, I’d like the “adult themes” disclaimers at the start of a TV show to mean that the program explores the nature of reality and the tragedy of existence, rather than just being a warning that someone might mention sex.
The article actually had more to do with gaming than the word “adult” but the commentary was good, as was the comment.

I’m all in favour of this kind of cultural preservation. Using technology to assist in this is quite cool:
Inuit language finds home on net
Inuktitut speakers will soon be able to have their say online as the Canadian aboriginal language goes on the web.
Browser settings on normal computers have not supported the language to date, but attavik.net has changed that.
It provides a content management system that allows native speakers to write, manage documents and offer online payments in the Inuit language.
It could prove a vital tool to keep the language alive in one of the most remote communities on earth.
“The worldwide web can seem like a foreign place to these people but now they can be players in that world. The internet will eventually be one of the basic tools that the Inuit people use,” predicted Mr Zielke.
The government of Nunavut is committed to making Inuktitut its working language.

…Number of Americans That Say Evidence Has Supported Darwin’s Evolution Theory
What would you guess for these statistics?
Percent of Americans believe that Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution is a scientific theory that has been well supported by the evidence [I’d guess 60%]
Percent that say that it is just one of many theories and has not been supported by the evidence. [I’d guess 25%]
Percent that say they don’t know enough to say. [I’d guess 15%]
Percent of Americans that believe that God created human beings pretty much in their present form about 10,000 years ago. [I’d guess 15%]
Percent of Americans are biblical literalists who believe that the Bible is the actual word of God and is to be taken literally, word for word [I’d guess 5-10%]

Last night, some friends and I were at the mall and then decided to peak at the Christmas stuff just inside the door at Toys R Us. I was prepared to look at the stuff just at the front and then my friends wanted to go and explore the rest of the store. What a great place. I have been known to go there by myself but it was so much fun with friends. I think the highlight is the new Home Depot toys. They have a jack hammer, drill, grinder, chain saw… they all light up and make great sound effects.

I was thinking about my dream house today, deciding on things like having central sound system with surround sound in the kitchen and bathrooms and workshop. Then I ran into this: Coin-laundry machines meet IT
Sanyo Electric has developed a communications adapter for coin-laundry machines that connects through NTT’s ADSL or FTTH to the Internet… It furthermore, sends a mail to the user’s mobile phone or PC once the washing is finished.
How cool is that!

… when you sent in a cheque and it hasn’t been cashed. They confirmed that they received it, cashed the second one you sent in (because you had to send two…). You even told them it hasn’t been cashed yet…. Is it up to them? I guess I am marked as paid… but….

My book that I ordered a month ago arrived! Yippee! It was my first used book purchase over the internet so I was a little worried. Especially when it took a month to arrive. Well, I just opened it and it’s in mint condition! I am so happy! I guess things tend to get hung up at the border. Which reminds me, I should get busy putting my sisters present together as it is only a month until Christmas… and it might take a month to get to the sunny state.
Speaking of state, only one person in the grade 4 class today knew who the Prime Minister was…. the rest of the class thought it was Bush!
