Sometimes a Title is Too Much Work

October 31st, 2004 -- Posted in General | 3 Comments »
  • It’s okay if a patient does it in the hospital, but there is something so wrong about a wet horking cough in public places - the kind where you can just imagine the thick huge gob of phlegm floating up the airways, breaking into particles, and in an instant of noise, being expectorated into the air, onto other people, or surfaces for others to touch. I then look around and it’s like the CSI episodes where they light up the human biological products with the special light - it’s as if the bits of sputum glow a neon blue that only I can see.
  • Just as soon as Boston wins the World Series, New England loses their first NFL game in over a year - apparently so that local fans can’t gloat for more than one team. The same thing happened years ago with New York (Yankees win, Jets/Giants/Rangers/Islanders lose), and a while ago with others - say, Dallas.

Well, I logged into Chapters.ca today and low and behold, they sell used books now. They have revamped their website a little and it includes used books…. and iPods.

EDIT: Well, just looked up a used book… and Alibris is the seller. Interesting.

    Halloween

    October 30th, 2004 -- Posted in School | 2 Comments »

Well, yesterday was my last day of my first placement, as well as our Halloween party! Woohoo! As teacher candidates, we were nominated to put on a Halloween thing for the primary grades. We did an interesting ummm… dramatic presentation followed by some Halloween songs. It went pretty well… considering none of us were really drama type people. The teachers were just happy that they didn’t have to do anything. As for food, we had to have two rounds of afternoon snack as there was a lot of food. Only one kid in our class barfed from eating too much. The kids were soooo cute in their costumes. We only wore costumes in the afternoon so all morning they wanted to know what I was going to be. I had a boring costume as a was a girl in our play… so I wore overalls, pigtails, freckles… said I was a farmer. In the play my main part was just my ‘leg’ moving … scarily…. and the kids in my class just knew it was me because they couldn’t see me anywhere else… Anyway, we had a great day… it was a great way to end my placement there. So I am off to Queen’s for two weeks of classes. I’m looking forward to the break and the great hours … then it’s back to the school until Christmas.

    Cool Name

There is a girl in one of my classes and her name is Emma-Leigh. It sounds just like Emily but has a cool spelling. I love it!

    Internet Cafe

    October 28th, 2004 -- Posted in General | No Comments »

Ah, gotta love techie conferences with a sponsored internet cafe. There’s nothing more frustrating than talking about this stuff and then not having the opportunity to play at all. But yeah, I’m so far behind in toys - people here have everything, and I’m using a nice 21″ LCD monitor. I gotta upgrade.

    Cemeteries

There was an article in today’s paper about the local cemetery. They said that there is a headstone that states “I told you I was sick!”.

    Weird

    October 27th, 2004 -- Posted in General | 3 Comments »

I am on my way out the door so don’t have time to add links… BUT… our friends are volunteering with VSO for the year and so we get a VSO newsletter once in a while. I was reaing through yesterdays and there was an article written by someone that had a name from my childhood. So I wrote to her to find out if it was the same person and I just got an e-mail confirming it was!! She was actually a friend of my childhood friend Melissa. She would visit from Montreal and that is how I got to know her. Weird.

    Extension Fascination

    October 25th, 2004 -- Posted in Computer | 2 Comments »

Firefox (and Thunderbird) extensions are incredible. I just installed the weather extension, in addition to oh, 20 others. The weather is the best, but the others are great too. I am amazed that some people still use IE (and Outlook Express).

Hosting is such a big deal - fun, but too much work

    October 24th, 2004 -- Posted in Cooking | 5 Comments »

    Today’s Menu:

  • Salad: avocado and pomegranate mixed green salad
  • Main Course: sirloin tip roast, marinated (red wine, oil, lemon juice, spices, and garlic)
  • Vegetable sides: sweet potatoes in butter, potatoes in oil and oregano, and green beans
  • Dessert: pumpkin pie with satin sauce
  • Beverage: red wine

I only hope that the meat isn’t tough for cooking a little too long, and that the potatoes don’t just fall apart, and the wine is good, and…

  • Gates

    October 24th, 2004 -- Posted in General | 3 Comments »

Coincidentally (and unintentionally), all within the same week, I signed out two books from the library “The Gate” and “Deadhouse Gates” and then I watched “The Gatekeeper”. All of them I didn’t really get into - they started off not grabbing me, and either I gave up or they didn’t get any better. What are the chances that things with “Gate” would be so pervasive, yet so uninfluential?

    Out of Print

    October 20th, 2004 -- Posted in Books | 5 Comments »

Does anyone have any good ideas of where to get an out of print book? I have checked all the usuals… Chapters, Amazon, Barnes and Noble. There is one copy on e-bay but just in case I get outbid… was looking for another option.

    Scholastic

    October 20th, 2004 -- Posted in School | 2 Comments »

I love Scholastic book orders. I loved them as a kid and I think I am even more addicted as an adult. Perhaps because I’m allowed to buy more than one thing out of a flyer and can buy out of multiple flyers. The prices are so great! They often offer books in softcover that are still only available in hardcover…. I love it. Can you tell I got the new order yesterday??

    Clean AND happy now

    October 17th, 2004 -- Posted in General | 3 Comments »

I’ll have my mother-in-law know that our kitchen is no longer a mess. It’s not as sparking as after you did your thing (your thing, which I must say I appreciate greatly), but it’s fairly clean.

    Sunday Cooking

    October 17th, 2004 -- Posted in General | 1 Comment »

I was a busy boy today - I made stuffed peppers for supper, with cinnamon buns (the real kind - with yeast) for dessert, and crock-pot rice pudding for after-dessert dessert. The pudding is a bit bitter (too many spices, I guess, and not enough sugar), but the buns are phenomenal (I’m surprised that there will be any left till tomorrow), and the peppers satisfied a craving I’ve been having for a few weeks. The kitchen is a mess, but my tummy is happy.

And I’m listening to Christmas music.

    Filling the Void

    October 17th, 2004 -- Posted in General | 1 Comment »

Conforming once again to the recommendations of Brock, we rented Touching the Void. I’d have to agree that it is one of the most intense movies - not often can that be said, much less of a documentary. The special features on the DVD were really good (so often they’re just a waste of time). I wonder why Simon responded as he did in “Return to Siula Grande”? “After Touching the Void” resolved some of my queries. I wonder what has been said between Joe and Simon in private since? I have the movie for 7 days - I wonder how many people I can loan it to in that time?

    Shhh!!… of the Dead

    October 16th, 2004 -- Posted in Movies | 3 Comments »

Oh my goodness - Shawn of the Dead is hilarious. Thanks Ed, er… I mean, Brock - for introducing me to it and recommending it. Jenn sat there for a while but because of the British accents (why do they have to talk that way?), I had to listen to it loud, and I think it kinda started to bother her, what with all the zombie noises and blasting of brains and bashing of skulls. But she said the really liked to listen to my laughter, in spite of the background sounds of cannibalism and swearing, and that it brought such joy and happiness to her. That was at least the jist of what she was thinking, I think. So …uhh… maybe I better see if I can find her and show that I’m not entirely thoughtless and insensitive. I did choose to have Pizza Pizza last night - knowing that it would make her happy (which it did). Hmmm… Pizza.
