13 Going on 30

April 29th, 2004 -- Posted in Movies | No Comments »

So my friend and I went to see 13 Going on 30 today. I loved it and it was so much better than I thought it would be. Lots of flashbacks to the 80’s and Jennifer Garner did a great job portraying a 13 year old in an adult body!! Very cute movie… I even cried!

“Spent four years prostrate to the higher mind, got my paper and I was free!!” ~ Indigo Girls

Well, I am done my degree! WOOHOO!! I have been on such a high all weekend… and am now crashing. Presented my thesis project on Friday and have been sitting for the past two days watching the rest of the presentations. I finished it!! I really did… even while working full-time!! Woohooo… Now… what to do with it, is the question?

Food, Food, Food. Eventually It Leaves.

My friend Jamie came by this morning after dropping his wife off, so together, the two bachelors, we went out for breakfast before starting work on putting up eavestroughs.

Breakfast was in this quaint breakfast restaurant out by our house. It looks like a hole in the wall from the outside, but the inside was clean and inviting, the owner/waiter was friendly in a quiet way. The food was hearty, and I was filled to satisfaction with an omelette, potatoes, toast and coffee.

After breakfast we put up the eavestroughs - well, actually eavestrough. I was going to do two sides, but the one side was too high and it would serve no useful purpose, so in an effort to save time and effort, reduce the cost, and avoid the fear associated with being up so high with inadequate supports, we only did half - the part over the deck, windows, flowers, and poorer drainage. The other side will be fine without. We also did our neighbour’s troughs as well - they’re so nice they have easily earned favours.

By the way - I’m calling them eavestroughs (a search for eavestroughs came up with a small number of results - mostly from Canada). I then searched for gutters and that I’m guessing is what Yankees call ‘em. I think I grew up with gutters - I don’t know when they became eaves.

Lunch then was in a nice pub, with a big glass of Hoegaarden, in front of the big screen hockey game, eating Cream of Chicken and Cheddar and Broccoli Chowder and Brushetta.

Went home, and watched the rest of the game, then surfed for a few hours (who knew that 2 computers could be a tool for entertaining visitors?).

Supper was a chinese all you can eat buffet - aughghgh. It was yummy. There were so many delish meat dishes. I didn’t even get to dessert… you see, I had to leave quite quickly. There was an urgent appointment I had to get to - in a special room of my house. Chinese I think does that to me. But it was worth it.

So now I’m ready to go to bed. I’ve talked to my honey and she’s good. I’m tired though. Have a great rest of the weekend.

It’s back!

Mr. Skunk has returned. I thought he had found another home but has decided to try our porch again. I bought some Critter Ritter today… so hopefully that works until we’re able to dig under our porch and put a barrier in. Argh!!

Happy Anniversary!!

Yesterday marked four years in our home!! Hard to believe we have been here that long. We are on our third neighbours on one side, and second on the other. We have added a bathroom and a laundry room… and still love it here!! Our first home… weird.

Movie Trailers

I have been a little distracted watching all of these movie trailers. They even have previews of movies that aren’t out until November!!

A Visitor!!

April 18th, 2004 -- Posted in Friends | No Comments »

We had a visitor last night!! My good friend Merry-Anne, from high school, was in town singing with the Elora Festival Singers. So I went to her concert (great job by the way!!) and then we went out on the town. She stayed over but had to leave after breakfast this morning. It was SOOOO great to see her since I think it’s been about 2.5 years!

Me? Picky?

April 17th, 2004 -- Posted in Cooking | 3 Comments »

Most people know that I am a picky eater… my neighbours included. I try to be a good guest when eating at other people’s homes, but sometimes that just isn’t possible. Last night, I went to my neighbours for dinner… and the appetizer, was a portabello mushroom pizza. It was a giant mushroom cap filled with cheese, spices and tomato. I HATE mushrooms… so I had to politely say how much I hated fungus. They made me try it… and I still couldn’t eat it… so my neighbour polished it off for me. They did think of me when having me over and served a wonderful chicken dish instead of having the fish they had wanted to have. It was a yummy supper overall but I had never really been a position where I really didn’t like the whole thing that was served to me. I felt pretty bad.

Internet Marriage??

A friend at work came in a little frazzled… her son announced at 5 am that he was engaged… to someone in Russia!!! They have never met… and have been ‘together’ for three months!! He ‘chatted’ with his future mother-in-law just last night…. He didn’t want his father to know about the engagement but the hollering seemed to wake him up…

Too much time…

I think I’ve spent too much time surfing today… I found this and thought it was neat. Make sure your browser is smaller than your full screen and watch it move!

I have been reading through people’s blogs and complaining to myself that they never update them… then I realized that I should update mine as they are probably thinking the same thing!!

My other half is away this week so it’s a week of eating what I want to when I want!! Woohoo!! Some people have taken pity on me and are feeding me two of my four nights. For supper tonight I had left over turkey dinner. Yumm! I made myself a nice turkey sandwhich with mayo, cranberry and salt. I brought Dairy Queen Treatza Pizza… so her kids loved me… so much that one of them shared the mashed potatoes with me (she wanted them all!!). Hmm.. what other dinner adventures will I have this week… Hmm…

The Prince and Me

April 12th, 2004 -- Posted in Movies | 2 Comments »

Yes, Doug is my prince but this post isn’t about him… it’s about the new movie, The Prince and Me. My friend Emily and I went to see it this afternoon… for some reason, Doug didn’t want to see it?? I’m sure my Mom would love it. It was a cute flick… there are lots of cute chick flicks out or coming out. And now Emily is my new chick flick friend. I used to go see them alone so it’s nice to have someone to go see them with… except I have to share my popcorn!!

Oh, I also loved Julia Stiles hair in this movie… perhaps for my next haircut…

Worth It?

April 10th, 2004 -- Posted in Money | 2 Comments »

The comedy crew from “Whose Line is it Anyway?” (minus Wayne Brady) will be doing an improv. night in Kingston in May. They are hillarious… but are they worth the price of $40.50 per ticket?? What do you think??

Me? Professor Mitchell?

April 9th, 2004 -- Posted in News | No Comments »

Check out the email I received from Queen’s…

Dear Professor Mitchell:
The Senate Nominating Committee would like to recommend you as a member of the Senate Information Technology Committee (SITC).

Crazy exciting stuff.

Doug Passed

April 9th, 2004 -- Posted in Marriage | 2 Comments »

Doug has never really had the opportunity to get up in the night and take care of me when I was sick. Well, last night, I wasn’t quite sure how sick I might be… so I left the bedroom door open but closed the bathroom door. I ended up needing a barf bucket so I was calling out to him… banging the floor… and clapping!! And lo and behold Doug appeared. He got my barf bucket, a themometer, change of clothes, cold cloth, got the other bed ready, and just took good care of me in the middle of the night. What a good boy!!

Finished Yet…?

April 7th, 2004 -- Posted in Addictions | No Comments »

I seem to have this problem with finishing things… or should I say, not completing things. I seem to lose interest or energy at the end of many things. I go to clean a room, and get everything all out of the closets and then get too tired so I just throw it all back in. I have this big project I have been working on for months… and now that it’s almost finished… I can’t seem to get it done! Argh!! Why am I such a slacker? Afraid to succeed?

Another Silly Addiction

April 7th, 2004 -- Posted in Addictions | No Comments »

I have a few silly addictions, but this one is “great address labels”. I guess it coincides with my “mail” addiction. I love getting and sending mail… and e-mail. So I have always loved stickers for letters and great labels. My only problem is that most great address labels are from US companies that don’t ship to Canada…. until today. I just did a random search and came across Colorful Images which ships to Canada. They have a huge selection and I can’t wait to order some!!

Meatloaf

On a more positive potluck note, Andrea brought in a meatloaf. The thing that made it so special was that it had a layer of ham and cheese in the middle!! Yummm!

Potluck Etiquette

April 5th, 2004 -- Posted in General | 2 Comments »

We had a small potluck at work today with the people who work in our room… One person who works in our room also does lunch duty so the kids she supervises were brought into our room during lunch… So… some other lunch supervisers came to our potluck and helped themselves. How come it is always those who don’t bring any food to potlucks are the ones that eat the most??? We have treat day once a week and there is this one staff member who hovers over the staff room all morning and probably takes about five helpings of treat. They are also the first to tell someone off if they forgot to bring in treat… yet when it is their treat day, they often forget or bring something VERY small. Interesting. Anyway, I have been tortured to participate in TWO potlucks this week. Luckily my husband made a salad for me last night and I only have to bring rolls in on Wednesday!!
