August 30th, 2003 -- Posted in Misc | No Comments »

Is it possible that it really is Labour Day weekend already? Wow. It looks like we will be busy into the fall as well with two weddings and a shower and I’m sure there will be a bachelor party in there as well (not for me to attend I’m sure). Doug is also headed to Boston on a business trip! How exciting! My brother will be thrilled if Doug brings him home anything that says Boston on it. We are just enjoying our last long weekend of the summer and have friends coming tonight. Hopefully we’ll be able to convince them to play Dutch Blitz for hours with us.

I received confirmation today that effective one and a half weeks from now, I will begin a 6 month full-time position as a clinical applications specialist implementing a new information management piece of software at our hospital. There’s a good possibility that it will be extended for another 6 months to develop in another direction (still clinical applications, but for physicians and nurses instead of the ancillary health professions - xray, dietician, PT, etc.), with further possibility that it may become a permanent position within the IT department. I’m not holding up hope, but I’d love to do a great job at this to open this door. I was saying to my boss - “You know, this is exactly what I want to do with my life.” She replied, with a grin, “I know.” It’s so nice having someone pushing for you, backing you up to external organizations and internal management. One other avenue of this job (the initial 6 month position), is the webpage design. I’m ecstatic. Hmmm… maybe this will be the end of physio for me.

One of the highlights of our trip for Doug was our visit to Fuddruckers. It was there that Doug experienced the ONE POUND burger. I only had a 1/3 burger and that was plenty for me. It was big to start with and then Doug just loaded it with toppings. They have a section where you can dress your own burger. They have everything and in every style as well. You can get your tomatoes sliced or diced. Quite an experience. That is my little burger in the bottom corner.

*sniff* I sent Doug a card in the middle of July while I was away and he still hasn’t received it. Maybe it will arrive when he needs it most.

I got a great deal while I was away. The Mennonite Information Centre was having a huge book sale and I managed to pick up some old hymn books. I always look for unique ones when I see a sale but rarely find them. I have been playing through these ones and they have a lot of hymns that I don’t know and a lot of them are in minor keys which I love. I also saw the Amish hymn book but since it doesn’t have music and is in Pennsylvania Dutch, I decided against buying it.

For Christmas last year, we gave Doug’s sister and her family a webpage. It would seem that they just haven’t been updating it lately. So be sure to e-mail them and encourage them to update their page.

I’m glad Doug and I took our holidays during the two weeks of summer we had. I think the highs later this week are 13 and 15!! Yikes. Well, Wednesday of this week is when my fate is decided for yet another year. I will most likely be back at the same school with the same student this year. Not many people choose to work at the school I do but since I haven’t really worked any where else, I don’t know any different!! The hours are great and the staff are super to work with. At some schools there is a real separation between EA’a and teachers but not where I work. I think because half of the staff are EA’s, there is power in numbers!!

While in Lancaster, we saw two amazing theatre productions. We saw Daniel as well as Abraham and Sarah. Both were excellent but we preferred Abraham and Sarah. It was in a smaller theatre and you felt more a part of the production. Daniel was amazing in different ways as it had stages on either side as well and there was so much to see. There were live animals in the productions. At Daniel, we were close to the hearing impaired section and were able to watch the interpreters which was quite amazing. If you are ever in the area, I recommend their shows. I believe there are two new shows coming in November… two different Christmas shows.

When we went across the border from Canada to the US, the customs guy was friendly but thorough. He looked over ID quite well and also looked in our trunk and opened our suitcases. He questioned us about what was in our cooler (no Canadian beef) and then sent us on our way. I’ve never had anyone look in the car! He seemed to be looking in most trunks though. BUT then on the way home, the Canadian customs guy was nice and relaxed in his chair and asked us the basics - citizenship, where you were visiting… and then asked Doug what his shirt said. It was www.canada.eh. Then they got into a discussion whether it was a real website… that is should be a website and which one of them was going to own the domain first! Totally different experiences.

Anyone going anywhere near Lancaster, PA needs to visit Shady Maple. It was the nicest and biggest smorgasbord I have ever been to. Thank you to Judy who tipped us off on that one!! It was also only $8.50 for all you could eat everything!! They even had slushies! The desserts were quite delicious as well. I think I’ll be excercising for a few weeks to catch up with a week of eating!

I ate a real breakfast

August 21st, 2003 -- Posted in Misc | No Comments »

I ate a real breakfast while I was away on my trip. Anyone who knows me knows that I do not eat normal food for breakfast, if I eat breakfast at all. Does it matter that it was off the children’s menu? It was only $1.99 for one egg, two pieces of bacon and an English muffin. It was pefect… even though it left Doug in a little bit of shock. It settled down when I just ate muffins and danishes for the rest of the week. The hotel provided a pretty good continental breakfast. The only problem was that the muffins and danishes were about 450 calories each with about 20 grams of fat. Very interesting. They were quite yummy though.

We are back from Pennsylvania

August 21st, 2003 -- Posted in Misc | No Comments »

We are back from Pennsylvania yet still on holidays. Most of our vacation was spent in Lancaster, PA. We had some days packed filled and others were more relaxing. There was lots to see and do and we didn’t get it all in. We had interesting experiences at both borders … had great food, and saw some great theatre shows. We’re looking forward to relaxing for the rest of our holiday.

I have been following a story in the local paper though. Someone was doing some gardening around their retaining wall and when they turned over the stone, it turned out to be a tombstone. It appeared as if the stone was brought in with all the other stones and that there was not a secret burial ground in this persons backyard. Well, all the geneologists of the area went digging in the archives and found that this stone was from Athens around 1850. The cemetary in Athens was closed in 1975 or so but no one knows what happened the the remains in the cemetary. There is a law that they need to be reburied elsewhere. It is amazing how many unmarked cemetaries there are in Kingston. I mentioned how our church recently found remains in their parking lot when trying to build. They had to go through the process of having an archeologist come in and assess the site before they could remove the remains. People who visit really must go on the Haunted Walk. They tell you about many of the hidden burial grounds and their stories behind them. Quite fascinating.

A funeral home in Kingston

August 6th, 2003 -- Posted in Misc | No Comments »

A funeral home in Kingston closed a few months ago when one of the owners was charged with manslaughter (trying to get more business I guess). Well, the funeral home just sold…. to a local church. It will be interesting to see how the church fixes it up.

On a lighter note, my friend had the cutest dog. She has a dachshund and he is just adorable. He didn’t bark the whole time I was there, he is the laziest thing that just mozies about and has this cute little waddle. I want one. All I need now is $700.00.
